Bangladesh government has taken a large project to upgrade production technology of jute mills under $350 million foreign loan due to continued erosion of competitiveness of jute mills in the country. Domestic market is the key to enable local technology value addition capacity to grow.

The Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices (CACP) has recommended reduction in compulsory packaging to 75 percent, from the present 90 percent, in case of foodgrain. As these compulsory provisions do not encourage the jute industry to develop or diversify its production lines to high-value products. But according to the jute industry, if the Union government approves the recommendations it will stand to lose Rs1,000 crore in the 2016-17 season.

The political turmoil in Bangladesh has hit jute export trade and income of the country's 96 private jute spinners. Overall export earnings and activities of the factories have been hampered because of blockade coupled with hartals enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance, the Bangladesh Jute Spinners association said.

Bangladesh exports and local trade of jute hit hard by 20-30 per cent in the last 26 days due to political turmoil. The jute sector suffered loss of an estimated Tk 5.1 billion, insiders said. The Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC), Jute Mills Association (BJMA), Jute Spinners Association (BJSA) officials said that nearly 249 jute mills in the country have been forced to cut production by 42,000 tonnes owing to the blockade enforced by the BNP-led alliance since January 5.

The Pakistan jute industry is looking for government support in technical infrastructure for industry along with guidance and long term policy support for jute cultivation to substitute import of raw material, exports of jute products after value addition which can earn handsome amount of foreign exchange for the country, which currently stands at around $14 million according to Saqlain Akhtar, Senior Vice President of Pakistan Jute Mills Association (PJMA).

Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) is going through an acute financial crisis mainly due to decline in exports of jute goods is seeking for financial assistance from the government of TK5.0 billion to procure raw jute urgently to feed its mills, as the prime time of cash crop has now set in.
 
Major-General Humayun Khaled, Chairman of the BJMC, sent Monday a letter to Mahbub Ahmed, senior secretary of the ministry of finance (MoF), seeking the fund support.
 

Jute mills practicing unfair trade to be banned from government quota

Some jute mills, including a majority of them belonging to Indian Jute Mills Association (Ijma), have been found illegally importing jute bags from Bangladesh and Nepal at a cheaper price to sell it at higher prices to the state-owned food procuring agencies for profiteering.
The Jute Commissioner has warned the jute industry of a ban on their getting a government quota for five years, citing unfair trade practices by some mills.

The Jute Packaging Materials Act, 1987 provides for compulsory packaging of sugar and food grains in jute bags by government agencies up to 100 per cent.

Jute mills in Khulna-Jessore registered sharp decline in export of jute goods

The state-owned jute mills in Khulna-Jessore industrial belt has registered a sharp fall in export of jute goods by 38.65 percent in the just concluded fiscal year compared to its preceding fiscal due to lack of demand in global market, over the political instability in major importing countries.
 
According to Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC), about 31,647-tonne jute goods was exported from nine state-run jute mills of the region till the first week of June in the fiscal 2013-14, against the export of 81,881-tonne in the fiscal 2012-13.
