China to see rag trade slipping through its fingers

China though stands as the world leader with US$170 billion worth of garment exports a year but the trend since early last year has clearly been down, in part because of stagnant demand in world markets and, to some extent, because unit prices are down.

The dilemma for all developing economies that rely heavily on the rag trade is now facing China as new competitors emerge underneath it.

Pakistan’s jute industry fulfills all basic raw material requirements importing from a single country, Bangladesh which has allowed export of 11,000 tons of jute to Pakistan, orders booked before exports were banned in November 2015.

Shortage may still occur as Islamabad has not taken up the matter with Dhaka to get the issue resolved immediately, said a local industry official.

Bangladesh, which is among the top garment manufacturing and exporting countries globally has to heavily bank on India, especially Gujarat, for cotton and yarn for its garment industry. The neighbouring country proposes to set up a textile park in the state of Gujarat.

Bangladesh has zeroed in on Kadi near Ahmedabad for the project which involves an initial investment of Rs 240-300 crore. To begin with, the park will have spinning units with cumulative capacity of 1 lakh spindles. Bangladesh has sought around 100 acres of land from the state government for the project.

The United States Fashion Industry Association (USFIA) conducted the second US Fashion Industry Benchmarking Study, where executives from 30 US-based fashion companies, retailers, importers and wholesalers were surveyed between March and April this year. The survey found that Bangladesh was the sixth most popular sourcing destination this year with 50 percent of the respondents currently buying from the country. The survey report was published early this week.

A sharp decrease in price of raw cotton in domestic market this year has failed to cheer the yarn makers as buyers of cotton yarn are procuring yarn at a negotiated prices. Last year, the cotton yarn manufacturers who made a excess profits due to rally in domestic and international markets are in a somber mood over slow-moving demand and compressed prices.

Indian cotton exports likely to see downward trend to the tune of upto 7 mn bales this year

Cotton exports is estimated to be between 6.5-7 million bales (1 bale = 170 kgs) this year by trade source as against 11.8 million bales shipment estimated by the Cotton Advisory Board (CAB) during last year. Decline by about 45% this year (October – September) on falling demand from its perennial importers i.e. China and Bangladesh.

China, the largest importer of Indian cotton has reduced cotton import from India in recent months. The second largest Bangladesh has also lowered its dependence on India due to higher domestic cotton prices.

Indian textile industry anticipate close to 10% growth in apparel exports to the US

Indian apparel exports to the US has witnessed rise by 7.5% at 745 million square metres equivalent (msme) for the period January-September 2014 over the corresponding period last year, as per the latest data by the US Department of Commerce's Office of Textile and Apparel (OTEXA).
