The Centre of Excellence for Medical Textiles at the South India Textile Research Association in Coimbatore has organized a three-day medical textile exhibition and conference till March 2, supported by the Union Ministry of Textile to promote the use of textile products and medical textile industry. India to boost modernization of the textile industry, Finance Minister P Chidambaram in his Interim Budget 2014-2015 has proposed reduction in the excise duty on textile machinery from 12 percent to 10 percent. It covers all goods falling under falling under chapter 84 and chapter 85 of the Schedule to the Central Excise Tariff Act for the period up to 30.6.2014. However, the Minister added that the rates can be reviewed at the time of the regular Budget, which would be presented by the new Government that takes office after the scheduled General Elections later this year.

Low participation of spinning mill-owners in cotton trading continues waiting for a decline in cotton price had kept the cotton trading turnover at low.

Traders exchanged mere 4,863 bales (of 155 kilogram each) at Rs5,800 to Rs7,050 per maund as compared to 6,140 bales traded at Rs6,700 to Rs7,050 per maund a day ago, according to Karachi Cotton Association.

The Karachi Cotton Association on Thursday fixed the official spot rate or base price for Grade 3 cotton at 7,395 rupees per maund (40 kg).
