Palakkad handloom industry faces downturn due to lack of government support

The handloom industry in Palakkad is going through a downturn, which is a major source of revenue for many people in Palakkad district. Due to low wage coupled with lack of support from the government, the weavers are struggling to make both ends meet. The handloom workers are now forced to shift to other professions.

A special ‘Aadi’ discount sale of silk saris from across the State has been organized to provide opportunities for the weavers to showcase their products and improve their livelihood. The exhibition was inaugurated by Minister for Handlooms and Textiles S. Gokula Indira on Tuesday in Madhurai.

The exhibition-cum-sale has on display products by weavers involved with cooperative societies from Thirubuvanam, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Salem and Kumbakonam.

Textile parks will spell kismet for weavers in Kurnool

The Government being aware that protection to the sector is required to be continued because of the pious obligation to protect the heritage of the State and support is required to be continued to offset the built-in cost handicap of the handlooms. Butta Renuka, Kurnool MP has promised that a textile park would soon be set up in her constituency Kurnool.

Kurnool is famous for handloom products, and many people of the area are involved with this activity.

A cluster of 80 villages in Nalgonda district of Telangana state forms Pochampally which has traditional looms whose design is more than a century old. Indian Trust for Rural Heritage and Development (ITRHD) and Dr YSR National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management (NITHM) was signed MoU to promote Pochampally in different manners and thereby enhance the livelihood of the weavers.

Ikat is a century old textile, historically made all over Asia, Central Asia and some parts of Africa. Ikat is also an ancient Indian dyeing technique that brings vintage, handwoven, geometric or zig zag arrow pattern into textile. Hand-dyed and handwoven Ikat is made using both silk and cotton yarns.

The Tamil Nadu government has sanction Rs 14 lakh to state-run Cooptex, a Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers’ Co-operative Society to help them move ahead with the plan to revive primal traditional saree varieties of Tamil Nadu.

There are very few weavers skilled in making traditional sarees of Tamil Nadu like Kandangi, Sungudi, Chinnalampatti and Koorai Nadu that were popular decades ago. Efforts are on to identify such craftsmen and convince them to start weaving back these traditional sarees for Cooptex.

State of Manipur focuses on popularizing handloom sector. As a step towards it, the Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans Co-Operative Society Ltd, organized a Handloom Readymade Garments Popularisation Awareness Programme at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal.

V Tualthang, Additional Director, Commerce and Industries Dept, Manipur during the programme said that the State gives importance to handloom and popularises its uses, as it is capable to provide an economic development.
