Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous nation with the growing influx of investment in its textile business will enhance the country’s efforts to improve local companies engaged in the manufacturing sector.

While The Economist projects an annual growth of 7 to 8 percent through 2016 for the country, Ethiopia’s Government Growth and Transformation plan places growth rates of at least 11.2 percent per annum during a decade long period it set to achieve a middle-income status.

Cotton trading picking up slowly as spinning mill-owners continued to buy the commodity to avoid a likely rebound in prices, a dealer said on Friday. Trade turnover witnessed improvement to 21,600 bales (155 kilograms each) against 21,000 bales a day ago in Pakistan.

According to a broker at the Karachi Cotton Exchange, spinning mill-owners continued to buy fresh stocks of cotton to avoid a likely rebound in the commodity price.

The textile and clothing companies have newly formed Botswana Textile and Clothing Association (BTCA) that will help in enhancing growth and sustainability of their trade in highly competitive market. It also aims to eliminate the existing competition, especially from Asian companies in the textile and clothing industry.

According to BTCA founding president, Mr Shahid Ghafoor, it would promote the development of a globally competitive and sustainable textile and clothing sector in Botswana.

Among the companies that visited Ethiopia were, Groz-Becket KG, Fong's Europr GMBH, Interspare GMBH, Jakob Muller AG and zHeusch GMBH & co KG.

Active buying by mills and exporters was witnessed on the Pakistan cotton market as prices moved warily on Tuesday. The official spot rate remained unchanged at Rs 5,200, dealers said. In the ready session, around, 20,000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 5200 and Rs 5300. In Sindh, rates were lower by Rs 100 to Rs 2000 and Rs 2025, while in Punjab prices were at Rs 2300 and Rs 2600.

Malaysia being warned by group against the trade deal that with the signing of the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) by year-end, it could stand to lose RM5 billion annually with the faster increase in imports than its exports.

The TPPA is a free trade agreement involving 11 countries namely Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam.

Bantah TPPA chairman, Mohd Nizam Mahshar, said that the bigger imports would result in an unfavourable trade balance with a net loss on the country.

BTK is not the only Russian company, which plans to establish large-scale production of technical textiles. Several days ago the National Investment and Finance Corporation (NIFC), one of Russia’s largest investment corporations also announced the establishment of the large cluster for the production of textile and technical textile products in the Russian Ryazan region.

TCP to start buying one million bales of cotton from farmers this year

The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has not been in the business of cotton purchase since 2005-06, but this year after a decision taken by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) the corporation revived its centres in Sindh and Punjab for the procurement drive.

The TCP will start buying one million bales of cotton from farmers in the first week of November and achieve the goal in one and a half month.
