Px-naphtha spread at 2014 peak in Asia, European makers better off

Asian contract price for paraxylene (Px) once again failed to reach a settlement for June, for the eighth time in the last 10 months. Meanwhile, spot prices have jumped US$145 during June, the second highest monthly gain in 24 months. In June prices surged throughout the month on active short covering for July. They are now at their 2014 peak.

Asian PTA prices gave back some of its recent gains despite continuous soaring feedstock paraxylene prices since early May (0.66 unit paraxylene required to produce 1 unit of PTA). The tighter domestic PTA market in China was found easing in the week ended 20 June. Sinopec restarted its four PTA plants across China on 18 June, boosting paraxylene sentiment as demand will resume from these four units, hence prices soared in the week. The contract price for PX in Asia failed to reach a settlement for June, the eighth time in the last 10 months leaving PTA makers to enter spot.

Spun yarn exports declined in May 2014 after jumping over 19 per cent in April in a year-on-year comparison. During the month 99 million kg of spun yarns were exported worth US$335 million or Rs 1,995 crore. In terms of growth, the volumes were down 6 per cent while US$ earnings fell 10 per cent implying a faster fall in unit price realization, and also the Rupee depreciated 11 per cent against the US$. Average unit price realization was US$3.39 /kg, down US cents 15 than the realization a year ago but up US cents 5 from previous month.

Asian ethylene markets were on the bullish note in the week ended 23 May as spot supplies tightened amid a lack of regional supply, supporting prices to rise. The markers rose US$12 a ton CFR Northeast Asia while South Korea marker was up US$5 a ton. Meanwhile European spot ethylene market tracked increase in naphtha values and ended at a six-week high, up Euro12.50 a ton FD NWE on the week. In US, spot ethylene prices recovered US cent 0.75 per pound despite thin trade while the market discussed producers preparing for third-quarter turn around.

Spun yarn prices continued shed slightly in the week of 16 May in China, although fibre prices remained more or less stable. However, prices in Pakistan were seen rebounding as demand from overseas buyers was apparently recovering.

There has been no contract price settlement for paraxylene in Asian market since February this year and the spot is used to peg derivative PTA values. Japan's JX Nippon Oil and Energy although finished its negotiations for the May Asian Contract Price for paraxylene but could not reach a settlement. Meanwhile spot paraxylene prices dropped US$70-75 a ton in March only to recover partially in April. In Europe too, May contract failed to settle while March and April saw spot numbers losing over US$80 a ton.
