Benzene markets tumbled across regions and prices plunged sharply in Asia on weak demand amid excess supplies. The arbitrage window from Asia to US was firmly shut. In Europe, prices dropped amid demand gaps as it lost demand from styrene market with the benzene-styrene spot spread surging dramatically. In US, the benzene markets saw another decline as export opportunities to Europe were absent with the price spread narrowing.

In April 2015, Asian ethylene-naphtha spread hit a record high amid bullish ethylene markets. The spread jumped US$193 during the month on an average as ethylene prices were under pressure of tight supplies. The CFR Northeast Asia ethylene marker averaged US$1,368-1,370 a ton while the Southeast marker averaged US$1,423-1,425 a ton, both increasing US$214-240 on the month. The spread was over and above the US$269 a ton recorded in March.

Cotton yarn market again lost ground, and participants were holding bearish expectations over the future trends amid sluggish sales. In the week ended 15 May 2015, cotton yarn markets showed signs of weakness. In China, sale/ production ratios reported fell at some spinning mills in China while outlook turned even gloomier given the increase in inventory levels. Prices were unchanged due to a lack of demand from downward processors. In Shengze, 32s cotton yarn was pegged in the range of US$3.37-3.44 a kg, while 21s was at US$3.29-3.36 a kg.

Benzene prices jumped sharply across regions for the third consecutive month of April, with highest rise seen in Europe. Asian benzene prices rose on strength of downstream styrene and toluene markets and also buoyed by the spurt in US numbers. Asian benzene marker, the FOB Korea jumped 8% or US$62 in April. In US, spot benzene posted sharp gains in week four of April on buying interest and gains in Europe. In Europe, reduced pygas availability pushed benzene markets up while exports and rising demand reduce domestic supply. US spot prices rose 12% while European spot jumped 17% from March.
Polyester pricing up in April on production disruptions and surging crude

Production disruptions caused by fire at major PTA and MEG plants in China pushed up Asian raw material prices in April, triggering an immediate response in polyester chain. The surge was largely for margin protection rather than market fundamentals, but prices moved aggressively, rallying every day. It was also all over again, beginning with crude pricing with fire a spontaneous trigger. Crude oil prices rose week after week in April and gained US$3-6 on the month.

Spun yarns made of man-made fibres recorded sharp decline in export both in terms of volume and value. During March, a total of 6.85 million kg of man-made spun yarn were exported, comprising 3 million kg of polyester yarn, 2.1 million kg of viscose yarn and 1.7 million kg of acrylic yarn. Polyester yarn exports were down 31 per cent in value while viscose yarn export was down 16 per cent during the month. Unit price realization was down US cents 10 for viscose and US cents 27 for polyester from a year ago.
Filament yarn exports were worth US$90 mn in March 2015

In March 2015, about 58 million kg of filament yarns (all types) were exported to 79 countries. These include polyester, nylon, polypropylene and viscose filament yarns. More than 90 per cent of all filament yarns were of polyester, of which, DTYs were the largest at 78 per cent.

These textile exports have propelled Turkey to become the fourth largest clothing manufacturer in the world and number one in Europe. The exports of Turkish textile and clothing goods have been on the rise in the recent years, however, its share in the country's total exports is decreasing. In 2014, textiles exports rose 6.3 per cent to US$18.4 billion.

Export volume of spun yarns from India continue to grow in March 2015, while prices retreated compared to their year ago levels. At this price level, it appears that spun yarns made in India have become globally competitive, particularly of cotton. The fall in prices reflect the decline in raw fibre cost in India.

The polyester chain witnessed another bout of price advances in the week ended 24 April, with polyester staple fibre and filament yarn prices zooming past or almost at par with its previous high seen in the last week of November 2014. This time prices the push came from the demand side rather than cost side. Also helping came from the rounds of maintenance shutdown in the upstream industry. Added to these factors was a couple of fire breakout at petrochemical plants in China that feed the polyester industry.
