Cheaper benzene across markets spells cost deceleration

US spot benzene prices dropped on weaker downstream demand pulling down prices in Asia, Europe and Latin American markets. US spot benzene prices dropped in the week ended 22 August falling below US cents 500 a gallon mark to begin the week and continued to fall later. Asian benzene marker, the FOB Korea was assessed at US$1,318-1,319 a ton, down US$29.50 week on week. US spot prices dropped US cents 19 on the week, assessed at 481.95-482.05 per gallon FOB USG.

Feedstock still supporting polyester chain, but for how long?

Feedstock paraxylene markets will continue to support downstream polyester segment for some time since more and more PTA capacity will come on stream while paraxylene supplies will remain short until new capacities come on line. Q3 and early Q4 will see demand from PTA for paraxylene firming rapidly. PET or polyethylene will drive the markets while textile filament will remain subdued. However, poor demand for polyester fibre is likely to weaken further in coming few weeks until prices stabilize at low level. This poor show will emanate from low cotton prices.

Paraxylene prices roars back to June levels

Asian paraxylene prices shot up significantly back to June end levels as traders' scrambled for short-covering in the week ended 18 July 2014. Prices continued to remain supported by shortage owing to the postponed start-up of new unit run by Total, planned maintenance of several units in China as well as the delayed restart of units run by JX Nippon. In the last two days of the week, prices gained as much as US$61 a ton and over the week, they were up US$83.50 closing the week at US$1,460-1,461 a ton FOB Korea and US$1,482-1,483 a ton CFR Taiwan/China.

Asian propylene prices were firmer in Northeast Asia due to tight supply and demand picking up in downstream sector particularly in the polypropylene market in the week of 4 July. The Asian marker, FOB Korea rose US$15 on the week to be assessed at US$1,394-1,395 a ton. The FOB Japan was pegged at US$1,375-1,377 a ton. Meanwhile, in Europe, chemical-grade propylene prices fell induced by supply glut which has been outpacing demand in recent weeks. Spot was down Euro12 on the week, to Euro1,055-1,060 a ton FD NWE and Euro1,035-1,040 a ton CIF NWE.
