Benzene strengthens support to downstream nylon chain

Benzene prices surged 13-16% in March across regions while US numbers hit a four-month high in the first week of the month. In Asia, a strong demand for May cargoes supported prices to go up while in European bullish sentiments caused prices to jump. In US, derivative styrene’s demand for benzene held firm as participants eyed export opportunities to Europe, which ultimately led to reductions in benzene supply locally. In Latin America, benzene prices rose week on week tracking key global markets higher.

Everything in synthetic fibre markets, especially polyester, has been revolving around crude oil price, and hence the US$. The first signs of policy change in US, expectation of a hike in interest rates, have led to a flight to the US$, supported by other currencies being devalued. And with world powers reaching a framework agreement with Iran to curtail its nuclear program, the stage has been set to end the sanctions that have restrained Iran’s exports.

Cotton yarn markets were in weak corrections during March 2015, seeing prices for low/medium-end yarn in downswing. In China, overall demand was deemed limited, and sellers faced poor margins with traders making cautious decisions. In Pakistan, cotton yarn prices remained flat on the export market, due to a lack of demand, which was apparently weakening in Far East and Europe, since buyers were expecting lower pricing in the coming months and postponing new orders. Indian cotton yarn prices slightly declined after a short-lived attempt by spinners to raise offers in the first week of March.

During February, fibre (cotton, ASF, PSF, VSF and wool) exports stood at 156 million kg, worth US$194 million or INR1,190 crore. Cotton accounted more than 85 per cent of all types of fibre exported during the month at 135 million kg or 800,000 bales worth US$164 million. About 21 million kg of MMF were also exported worth US$30 million.

In February more than 73 million kg of filament yarns (all types) were exported to 69 countries. These include polyester, nylon, polypropylene and viscose filament yarns. About 90 per cent of all filament yarns were of polyester, of which, DTYs were the largest at 79 per cent.

Exports to China has sprung back to over 50 million kg in February 2015 after hovering around 30-40 million from April to October and in January. In February, export of spun yarn to China jumped 19 per cent year on year in terms of value and 38 per cent in volumes. It imported 53.3 million kg of yarns worth US$140 million.

Spun yarn exports were up in February in terms of volumes but the fall in FOB per unit price, which apparently arrested in January, continued, leading to a sharp fall in revenue earnings. Volumes at over 122 million kg were worth US$355 million or Rs 2,190 crore, implying per unit realisation of US$2.90 per kg for all kinds of spun yarns. This was US cents 8 down from previous month and down US cents 45 from February 2014.

Benzene prices have gained 14-16 per cent across regions in March, pushed by an uptick in demand and stronger crude as players in US wanting to open the arbitrage window from Europe amid tighter supply expectations. However, benzene prices were seen easing end March as upstream toluene cooled down while arbitrage window to US remained closed. The week also witnessed a rare reverse arbitrage move. An estimated 20,000 ton cargo was set to arrive in China from the US in March-end.
