Decline in crude prices in November escalates into polyester chain

Crude oil prices in November declined on pressure from a rallying US$ and expectations of higher interest rate. The US$ hit 6-1/2-month high against a basket of currencies. Data also showed eight straight weeks of inventories builds in US. Brent, the global benchmark for oil, was less than $2 from setting new 6-1/2-year lows in the mid of November. US crude and Brent price fell 6.8% and 7.4% respectively as compared to previous month’s average. US Futures averaged US$42.91 a barrel, down US$3.15 from October and Brent averaged US$48.25, down US$3.56 on the month.

Polyester pricing up in April on production disruptions and surging crude

Production disruptions caused by fire at major PTA and MEG plants in China pushed up Asian raw material prices in April, triggering an immediate response in polyester chain. The surge was largely for margin protection rather than market fundamentals, but prices moved aggressively, rallying every day. It was also all over again, beginning with crude pricing with fire a spontaneous trigger. Crude oil prices rose week after week in April and gained US$3-6 on the month.

The polyester chain witnessed another bout of price advances in the week ended 24 April, with polyester staple fibre and filament yarn prices zooming past or almost at par with its previous high seen in the last week of November 2014. This time prices the push came from the demand side rather than cost side. Also helping came from the rounds of maintenance shutdown in the upstream industry. Added to these factors was a couple of fire breakout at petrochemical plants in China that feed the polyester industry.

Paraxylene prices roars back to June levels

Asian paraxylene prices shot up significantly back to June end levels as traders' scrambled for short-covering in the week ended 18 July 2014. Prices continued to remain supported by shortage owing to the postponed start-up of new unit run by Total, planned maintenance of several units in China as well as the delayed restart of units run by JX Nippon. In the last two days of the week, prices gained as much as US$61 a ton and over the week, they were up US$83.50 closing the week at US$1,460-1,461 a ton FOB Korea and US$1,482-1,483 a ton CFR Taiwan/China.

Asian contract price for paraxylene (Px) once again failed to reach a settlement for June, for the eighth time in the last 10 months. Meanwhile, spot prices have jumped US$145 during June, the second highest monthly gain in 24 months. In June prices surged throughout the month on active short covering for July. They are now at their 2014 peak.

There has been no contract price settlement for paraxylene in Asian market since February this year and the spot is used to peg derivative PTA values. Japan's JX Nippon Oil and Energy although finished its negotiations for the May Asian Contract Price for paraxylene but could not reach a settlement. Meanwhile spot paraxylene prices dropped US$70-75 a ton in March only to recover partially in April. In Europe too, May contract failed to settle while March and April saw spot numbers losing over US$80 a ton.

Demand for paraxylene has apparently rebounded a bit in the week of 21 March and prices were up in Asian markets. Hwever, in Europe paraxylene spot price was assessed down as the market was in bad shape, no demand and prices low. Purified terephthalic acid, a derivative of paraxylene, saw prices rising in Asia amid operating rate cuts by Chinese PTA producers and cost support. The markets warmed up a little and offers for cargoes were maintained above previous week’s level. In Europe, production rates for PTA increased recently, but were still low as demand remained weak.
