Textiles feedstock strengthens, may reflect in fibre prices later

Petrochemical derivatives are an important starting point for manufacturing textile fibers and filament yarns. While ethylene, paraxylene, benzene and propylene are mother feedstock for production of polyester, nylon, polypropylene and acrylic fibres and filament, any movement in their prices have direct impact on input costs and thus the final product pricing.

Propylene prices down for fifth week in a row impacting acrylic chain

Propylene prices fell for the fifth consecutive week in Asian markets losing almost US$75 over the period. The buy-sell gap widened as buying indications were lower than selling ideas at over US$1,000 a ton. In US, spot chemical grade propylene price dropped to a 6-year low as inventories approached 40-month high. Supply snags continued to pressure European propylene prices as unusual number of outages tightened supply. Asian propylene markers were down US$25-34 a ton FOB Korea week on week.

Acrylonitrile markets derived strength from upstream

Asian propylene prices were firmer in Northeast Asia due to tight supply and demand picking up in downstream sector particularly in the polypropylene market in the week of 4 July. The Asian marker, FOB Korea rose US$15 on the week to be assessed at US$1,394-1,395 a ton. The FOB Japan was pegged at US$1,375-1,377 a ton. Meanwhile, in Europe, chemical-grade propylene prices fell induced by supply glut which has been outpacing demand in recent weeks. Spot was down Euro12 on the week, to Euro1,055-1,060 a ton FD NWE and Euro1,035-1,040 a ton CIF NWE.

Acrylonitrile prices rose in Asian markets in the week ended 24 January, tracking higher production costs and tightening supplies. However, trades were scarce amid cautious buying sentiment in the week. In Europe, spot prices for acrylonitrile rose to a nine-month high on tighter supply fundamentals. Meanwhile in US domestic acrylonitrile prices also jumped to a nine-month high on higher feedstock propylene cost. Asian acrylonitrile markers surged US$30-40 with CFR Far East Asia to be assessed at US$1,979-1,981 a ton while CFR South East Asia moved up to US$1,960.
