Turkey negotiations under way for FDI in textile sector of Pakistan

Many Turkish companies have their presence in Pakistan and the country’s rising Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is fast becoming an attraction for Turkish companies as they scout for more business avenues, said said Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey General Secretary Mustafa Mente.

Mente said that currently negotiations are under way for Foreign Direct Investments in textile sector particularly in fabrics and yarn; however, some technical issues remain unresolved.

Vietnam is joining negotiations for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The RCEP, if comes into force, will create huge impetus for Vietnamese garment, textile sector as the country will not have to bear many trade barriers.

The RCEP covers 16 countries, including 10 members of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations and their regional trading partners of China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and India.

In the process of sluggish business, trading activity remain firm at cotton market on Tuesday, dealers said. The official spot rate also stayed unchanged at Rs 6500.

In Sindh, seed cotton prices were at Rs 3100-3450, while in Punjab, phutti rates were at Rs 3100 and Rs 3650, as per 40 kg. In the ready session, over 3,000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 6400 and Rs 6750.

According to expers, cotton traders welcomed issuance of the SRO and hoping for better outcome of incentives given to revive the textile sector.

Textile Made-ups segment to get additional 10 pc subsidy under ATUFS

The made-ups segment which is the second largest employment generator after apparels in the entire textile value chain will get additional 10 percent capital investment subsidy of up to Rs 20 crore under the Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme.

According to the notification from the Textiles Ministry "Every eligible made-ups unit which has availed 15 percent benefit under ATUFS will be paid an additional 10 percent capital investment subsidy on their investment up to an additional maximum cap of Rs 20 crore".

Trading activity at the cotton market remains selective amid firm physical price. Floor brokers said that majority of buyers bought second grade lint on bargaining prices at around Rs 6,425 per maund during the trading session. Around 960 cotton bales changed hands.

The Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) spot rate stood unchanged at Rs 6,250 per maund.

A senior trader, Ghulam Rabbani said that leading buyers were ready to pay premium price for fine grades and the ginning units in Sindh and Punjab stations were maintaining quality on demand from textile made-up and yarn sector.

In the wake of the ban on high denomination currency notes, the textile sector was looking for some practical help from the Centre, as due to low spending, consumption was taking a hit and the retailers naturally were reducing the purchases, which was affecting the manufacturing in terms of poor off take of yarn and fabrics form the buyers, Indian Texpreneurs Federation (ITF) Secretary, Prabhu Dhamodharan said.

Pakistan government has taken many steps to boost cotton exports which has witnessed negative trends during the fiscal year 2015-16 as compared to the last fiscal year 2014-15.

Cotton exports have declined from $11,983 million in the fiscal year 2014-15 to $11,020 during the fiscal year 2015-16.

Due to inconsistency in yield of cotton crop, rising cost of business and shrinking global demand resulted in decrease of cotton prices in the market and consequently, this affected the exports.
