Surat textile traders hit hard by South Indian truckers strike

Surat the largest man-made fabric (MMF) of the country and a big wholesale market for saris and dress material with the daily supply to the tune of over Rs30 crore of which four crore meters of fabric production in the city, around 25 percent goes to South India markets including Chennai, Andhra Pradesh and Telengana are hit hard following the indefinite strike called by truck owners in South India.

The strike is called to protest mainly the proposed 50% hike in the third party insurance premium.

Surat , the country’s largest man-mad fabric (MMF) and the Ministry of Textiles is seriously mulling of providing a Centre of Excellence and supporting the proposal for establishing a mega textile park at Pinjrat, Ajay Tamta, the Minister of state for textiles said at SITEX on Saturday.

Ajay Tamta said that the Ministry of Textiles is working positively on the proposals submitted by Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) on establishing a 'centre of excellence' and a mega textile park at Pinjrat near Olpad.

Surat, India's largest man-made fabric (MMF) hub to be adversely affected by the decision of Government of India's finance ministry to impose definitive anti-dumping duty on purified terephthalic acid (PTA) imports from China, Iran, Taiwan, Indonesia and Malaysia.

As per the government notification, the PTA imports from China, Iran, Taiwan, Indonesia and Malaysia will attract duty ranging from $85.67 per tonne to $168.76 per tonne. The high import duty will prevent small spinners in Surat and other places in the country from importing PTA, main raw material for manufacturing of yarn.

In cluster like Surat, the country’s largest man-made fabric MMF hub, there are around 1.50 lakh embroidery units working in decentralized and unorganized sector. Each process in garments manufacturing is carried out by distinctly by different units. Despite of this the embroidery sector has been excluded from getting the benefits of subsidy under Amended Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (A-TUFS).

Surat, the country's biggest manufacturer of man-made fabric has over 170 textile markets consisting nearly 50,000 textile trading shops on Ring Road area of the city due to which most of the textile goods transport companies have been functioning from residential areas in and around textile markets.

Acting on the complaint of residents, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has sealed over 70 transport godowns on Saturday and Monday as they were causing nuisance and traffic problems.

The country's largest man-made fabric (MMF) sector in the city surat is facing tough time with dumping of finished fabrics at throw-away prices by the Chinese. Textile entrepreneurs claimed that the dumping of the crores of meters of under invoiced finished fabric imported from China at the cheap rates of Rs 7 to Rs 8 per meter is the main reason behind the crisis.

The production cost of finished fabric in the local market begins from Rs 50 per meter and goes upto Rs 500 per meter depending on the quality.

Telangana team are in Surat to study textile industry there so that the system could be adopted in the textile park being planned to set up in Warangal. Surat man-made textile sector sees dip in daily production due to recession

The daily production of man-made fabrics in Surat has gone down from 3 crore metre to 2.3 crore metre in the past 20 days due to recession faced by the industry. Decline in production by at least 20 percent compared to last year, according to market sources.

The yarn prices have become unstable due to the falling crude prices. The principle ingredient used in the manufacture of polyester is ethylene, which is derived from petroleum. Due to this the industry is incurring loss of Rs 4 per metre, said Mahinder Ramoliya, a weaver from Sachin.
