FIASWI urges for hike in import duty on Chinese fabric

The Federation of Indian Art Silk Weaving Industry expressing concerns over the dwindling in demand of man-made fabric (MMF) manufactured in Surat, Maharashtra and other parts of the country due to the huge increase in import of MMF fabric in 2013-14 from China, Taiwan and South Korea.

FIASWI has urged for hike in import duty on fabric from 10% to 30% to discourage Chinese manufacturers.

Leading spinners including Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Indorama as well as the local spinning units in and around the Surat, the country’s biggest man-made fabric hub have reduced yarn prices by almost Rs 15 per kg in different categories in the last one and a half month to encourage sale of yarn in the textile industry, but there are no takers.

The powerloom weavers in Surat have stopped purchasing yarn, the basic raw material required in the production of polyester fabrics, due to overproduction and the upcoming festival season.

The first ever 'Baseline Survey of Powerloom sector' conducted by AC Neilsen ORG MARG for ministry of textiles, government of India confirm Surat as the biggest man-made fabric (MMF) hub in India.
 
The objective behind the survey was to collect authentic data on the number of powerlooms in India, various kinds of fabric produced and other information. A nine page format was designed and information was collected with the assistance of Powerloom Service Centre (PCS) and powerloom associations across India.
 

Kutch textile mega cluster to focus on handlooms, Surat on powerloom

Finance minister Arun Jaitley in the Budget had announced setting up of eight textile mega clusters that including one each in Surat and Kutch with an initial investment of Rs 200 crore. The upcoming mega textile cluster in Kutch to focus completely on handloom and handicrafts while Surat textile mega cluster will focus on powerlooms, said textile commission Kiran Soni Gupta during her one-day visit to the city.

The Surat textile industry expects an additional business of at least Rs 50 crore from the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. This time, the industry is eyeing vigorous business, the orders are expected to start pouring in after January 14 and complete by February-end.

According to industry sources, in recent state assembly elections of five states, candidates from different political parties purchased more than 2.5 lakh saris from Surti manufacturers to distribute to their voters. In 2009 general elections, more than 5 lakh saris and 2 lakh dress material pieces were ordered from Surat.
