Pakistan ginneries witness 28.93pc drop in cotton arrival

Ginneries across Pakistan as of December 1st have received seed cotton (phutti) equivalent to over 86,31,933 bacles of cotton which shows a decrease of 28.93 percent compared to corresponding period last year when ginneries received 1,21,45,705 bales according to the 7th fortnightly report of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) issued on figures of cotton arrival up to December 1st, 2015 on Thursday.

Lint prices remained firm to tight during first half of this week

Some needy buyers made forward deals for all grades during trading session at lint market before the start of the Eid ul Azha holidays from Thursday 24th September lasting till the end of this week. Thus lint prices reportedly remained firm to tight during the first half of this week. Business will now open on next Monday viz the 28th of September 2015.

Fresh selling in fine grades remained dull on back of holiday-like mood of ginners and sellers while buyers were anticipating decline in prices after Eid-ul-Azha, floor brokers said.

Seed cotton (Phutti) equivalent to over 21,97,801 bales of cotton have reached ginneries across Pakistan as of September 15, showing a decrease of 20.10 percent compared to corresponding period last year when ginneries received 27,50,563 bales, as per figures issued of cotton arrival in the second fortnightly report of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) up to September 15, 2015.

Seed cotton (Phutti) equivalent to over 1,339,990 bales of cotton have reached ginneries across Pakistan as of September 1 showing 23.96 percent decline compared to corresponding period last year when ginneries received 1,762,282 bales, according to figures of cotton arrival up to September 1 issued by Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA).

The sub-committee of National Assembly Standing Committee on Textile Industry had recommended fixing the minimum guaranteed price of cotton at Rs 2700 per 40 kg for the financial year 2015-16 after considering the cost of production. Delay from government to decide on cotton intervention price for the current season is likely to leave growers without due benefits. As Cotton growers in Pakistan are not given any subsidy, they have to compete with the prices of subsidized cotton.

As Ginners preferred to wait on sidelines due to depleted stock and delay in new crop, volume of business dropped on the cotton market on Saturday. According to dealers, the official spot rate remained unchanged at Rs 5450. In the ready session, approximately, 2000 bales between price range Rs 3750-5550 changed hands. Seed cotton rates in Sindh also stayed unchanged at Rs 2000-2600 while in Punjab prices registered at Rs 2400-3100

The rising cotton prices which had mind- numbing effects on the Pakistan market last week continue to remain fixed in the wake of the fact that the domestic market is left with only 200,00 bales of unsold cotton.

For whatever minimal quantity of seed cotton (kapas / phutti) prices in Sindh were quoted between Rs 2,000 and Rs 2,600 per 40 kgs, according to the quality, while in the Punjab they were quoted between Rs 2,400 to Rs 3,100 per 40 kilogrammes in a firming market.

Ginners raise asking prices due to shortage of lint cotton

Dull trading was witnessed at the Pakistan cotton market on Monday as most of the ginners again raised asking prices as they have very little stock of lint cotton. The official spot rate remained unchanged at Rs 5300.

Market sources said that trading activity came down in the absence of mills' buying interest as the ginners kept on the sidelines because of shortage of lint cotton. Nearly 1,000 bales of cotton sold at Rs 5650.

The prices of seed cotton in Sindh were at Rs 1900 and Rs 2500 and in Punjab rates were at Rs 2200 and Rs 3000, dealers reported.

With higher arrivals of phutti (seed cotton) and increased selling by ginners, cotton prices witnessed drop on Thursday. At the beginning ginners indulged in panic-selling which further pushed down lint prices as millers and exporter showed very little buying interest.

Exporters are facing difficulties in meeting export parity due to falling prices world over. Cotton prices are currently under pressure with China reducing its buying which is the single largest importer of cotton and cotton yarn.

Pakistan cotton growers and ginners once again faced frenetic trading on the cotton market on Wednesday and looked a bit upset due to strong supply of seed cotton.

According to cotton analyst, the growers and ginners had hoarded phutti in expectations of increase in profit amid tight supply but now phutti arrivals improved significantly, this is factor, which is inducing them to sell huge stock below the expected level.
