Farmers to take up cotton as substitute to toor according to the Agriculture Department

Mr. Manjunath said that currently cotton is cultivated on around 18,000 hectares in the district and the department plans to expand it to around 40,000 hectares this year. Admitting that lack of mechanisation and pests have been discouraging the farmers from cultivating cotton in the district despite conducive atmosphere, Mr. Manjunath said that Tamil Nadu has invented handy machines to pluck cotton.

The Indian state of Punjab Agriculture Department has set a target of 4 lakh hectares to be brought under cotton cultivation in eight districts of the Malwa belt this season. Last year, the area under cotton cultivation was 2.56 lakh hectares. Meanwhile, the Agriculture Department under its high density plantation technique is giving a subsidy of Rs 500 per acre to cotton growers.

Despite the reduction in area under cotton in Bathinda and Mansa districts. This year the cotton farmers have a reason to smile as the price of their yield is about to touch Rs 6,000 per quintal. This year has seen a bumper crop following control of whitefly. Last year, the price of cotton yield went much below the MSP, following which, Diwali turned black for farmers.

In Mansa, farmers have got Rs 5,800 for a quintal of cotton yield while in Bathinda, the farmers have got about Rs 5,750 per quintal. Farmers in Mansa district have got the highest rate to date for their yield.
