The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) has urged commerce and textile ministries to raise import duty on man-made fibre (MMF) yarn, cotton fabric and MMF fabrics by 15 percent to ring-fence local yarn, fabric and garment producers from the threats of cheaper import, especially from FTA nations such as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

According to data shared by CITI, imports of cotton yarn, man-made yarn and fabric have gone up dramatically post GST from July.

The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Company Ltd (SNGPL) following the directions on Thursday from Federal Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar restores gas supply for four hours a day basis to Punjab based textile industry, said industry sources. The SNGPL would supply 60 MMCFD LNG at the cost of $9 per MMBTU against the industry demand from both spinners and weavers asking for LNG supply at the rate of $8.5 per MMBTU.

Pakistan textile and garment exports earned has surpassed US$ 10billion mark in the first nine months of fiscal year 2014-15 that began on July 1, 2014. According to the data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, it has earned US$ 10.207 billion from textile exports. However, the value of textile and apparel exports during the nine-month period was 1.57 per cent lower compared to exports of $9.136 billion in the corresponding period of previous fiscal.
