Cotton USA eyeing 3 pc increase in sales in Indonesia

Indonesia is Cotton USA's fourth-largest market after China, Turkey and Mexico. Sales in Indonesia range between US$300 million and $600 million a year. This year, according to Cotton Council International (CCI), the export promotion arm of the National Cotton Council, a US industry association promoting the brand Cotton USA is eyeing a 3 percent increase in sales in Indonesia.

CCI Indonesian representative Andy Do said that the target would be achieved by approaching consumers directly to promote the products rather than only approaching businesses, as in the past.

For Mississippi farmers cotton is king once again as they are going to increase their cotton acreage this year, about 25 percent over last year. Last year, they increased about 25 percent over the previous year. In total over the past two years they have increased almost 50 percent, said cotton producer.

US cotton acreage to drop 15 pct this year over weak market price

The National Cotton Council (NCC) expects cotton farming in the world's biggest exporter to fall to 9.4 million acres in 2015. That would be the smallest cotton acreage since 2009, according to U.S. government data.

U.S. cotton farmers are expected to reduce acreage by nearly 15 percent this year as weak market prices force them to switch to other crops.

The NCC survey, widely watched as one of the earliest indicators of the next season's production, is based on a questionnaire mailed in mid-December to producers across the 17-state cotton belt.

According to reports, cotton farmers in US will probably cut down acreage to the lowest since 2009 after prices slumped in January to a five-year low.

Plantings is predicted to drop to 9.73 million acres in the season beginning 1 August, from 11.04 million a year earlier, as farmers will switch to other crops including peanuts. The National Cotton Council is set to release its planting-intentions survey on 7 February.
