Although Nike has recalled its “Betsy Ross” American flag sneakers, shoppers looking for flag-adorned clothing in stores will have plenty of other options, even though the popular trend is technically illegal.

Nike had intended to release a pair of Air Max 1 Quick Strike sneakers for the Fourth of July that featured a 13-star flag, commonly linked to Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross, but said Tuesday it halted distribution ”... based on concerns that it could unintentionally offend and detract from the nation’s patriotic holiday.”

Kelly Davis has started doing something she once considered unthinkable: buying clothes at Costco.

The 31-year-old had long resisted the warehouse chain’s clothing aisle; it just felt weird buying dresses and shirts at the same place she bought groceries. Plus, she said, “It’s where my mom shops."

But eventually, a pair of Jessica Simpson jeans — light blue, distressed, with holes — for only $13 did her in.

“Costco has really stepped up its game,” said Davis, who lives near Dallas. “The clothes are actually stylish. It’s not just old mom stuff anymore.”

At first glance, you would never know that Rich Mahoney’s clothes are different. That’s until, of course, you hear the hum of tiny robotic machinery working beneath the surface.

That’s because underneath Mahoney’s clothing is what he calls robotic clothing.

“It’s like a layer of extra muscles integrated into your clothing around your body,” he says.

Mahoney is the CEO of Seismic , a company that’s created a sort of jumpsuit that has robotic muscles positioned along the hip and around the abdomen sewn inside it.

The apparel retailer said that the composition of inventory has improved, implying it will become easier to sell the garments.

Hennes & Mauritz AB surged after the struggling Swedish clothing retailer showed progress coping with a buildup of unsold garments, raising hopes that the worst may be over after a three-year slump in earnings.

Inventory dropped slightly as a proportion of sales, easing to 18.2% at the end of May from a record 18.9% as of last August, H&M said Thursday. CEO Karl-Johan Persson said H&M still aims to boost operating profit this year.

The proposals from Parliament’s Environmental Audit Committee to begin to address the thoroughly outsized contribution of the fashion industry to the trashing of our planet were modest.

If they could be criticised, it was for that very modesty.

They started with the proposal for 1p per garment to be taken as a levy, raising £35 million a year to fund better collection and sorting of garments to stop them ending up in landfill.

People are buying more clothing today than they did 15 years ago.

But they’re only wearing it half as long.

That means clothing production and sales are both on the rise, and so is the amount of clothing in landfills.

In such a climate, “fast-fashion” companies, like Forever 21 and Zaful, are growing, said Karen Leonas, a professor in the Wilson College of Textiles at N.C. State University. And thrift stores and secondhand clothing sales are growing even faster, at 24 times the rate of other retail.

By now you may have heard that increasing tariffs on imports from China may impact the cost of everything from sneakers to patio furniture by up to 25%.

But in many categories, it’s still unclear how that increased cost could impact the end consumer: that’s you, who’s trying to buy a shoe or a lawn chair.

Direct-to-consumer apparel company Everlane showed the New York Times how much prices for its popular products could change once new tariffs are included in production costs.
