Int'l buyers asked to introduce new tech in Cambodian garment sector

The Ministry of Commerce (MoC), Cambodia during a meeting on Tuesday with representatives from global clothing brands and unions, said that the garment sector is burdened by low productivity brought about by outdated technology, which sinks the country into low positions within global value chains.

Hence, the government has called on international buyers to participate in the investment, increase investment in the garment and footwear sector and to introduce new technologies to help modernise the industry in order to help boost their exports, according to a senior official.

Pakistan exported textile commodities worth $961 million during November as compared to $1.13 billion of the corresponding month of the previous year, decline by 14.6 percent due to both external and internal issues going on in the country. Exports Likely to further tumble in the months to come with the suspension of gas supply to Punjab’s textile mills indefinitely by the government, said an official of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association.

Cambodian garment export shipment to the European Union led the way in making up for a decrease in exports to the United States. In the first six month of the year, it witnessed nearly 20 percent increase, according to a new Ministry of Commerce report.

As per report, outbound shipments from Cambodia brought in $3.9 billion for the first six months, as compared to the $3.28 billion for the same period in 2014. The rise was buoyed by a 32 percent increase in garments to the European Union, not including textiles and footwear.

Aptma demand for immediate remedial measures against Indian yarn dumping

All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) has demanded for immediate remedial measures against the anomalous increase in dumping of Indian cotton yarn by the Ministry of Commerce (MoC). There is 100 percent rise in dumping of Indian yarn mainly fine counts meant to produce and launch around 140 products under different popular brands annually which is putting the viability of local textile industry at stake.
