Since nations like the U.S. and Australia have lifted their bans on growing hemp, a revolution is brewing.

Innovators are taking up the gauntlet to cultivate this versatile plant for a medley of biodegradable materials including plastic polymers, building products, fabrics, wood, biofuel, paper and even car components.

It’s not new. The fiber from industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa) – from the same species as its cousin marijuana but without the mind-altering THC – has been used for thousands of years to make paper, rope, cloth and fuel.

Global sportswear giant Adidas aims at eliminating the use of virgin plastics in its products by 2024 — with a little help from a Maharashtra-based firm — the only one of its kind in the country to produce yarn out of discarded PET bottles.

At its first factory set up in Nashik five years ago, Polygenta Technology Limited deploys an unique technology to break down used PET (short for Polyethylene Terephthalate) bottles and convert them into polyester filament yarn.

Beverage-producing powerhouses PepsiCo, Nestlé Waters and Suntory Beverage & Food Europe are the three latest large-scale firms to join a consortium designed to tackle plastic waste.

The initiative, founded by bioindustrial innovator Carbios and cosmetics firm L’Oréal, seeks to promote Carbios’ PET-enhanced recycling technology; bringing it to scale and opening the process up to the mass market within four years.
