Gangwar urge PM to connect NREGA scheme with textile sector to motivate artisans

Union Minister for Textiles (Independent charge) Santosh Gangwar has put up a written proposal requesting the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to connect the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme with the Textile Ministry. The objective of the proposal is to develop basic amenities in the localities of artisans and weavers to motivate them to continue their traditional work.

Silk Fab exhibition-cum-sale 2015 kicked off to a great start at Novotel Hotel at Visakhapatnam on Saturday with more than 60 stalls exhibiting a wide variety of textiles from 41 agencies across 11 states, including four weavers who won national awards for design. The exhibition aims to bridge the gap between buyers and weavers by bringing the latter closer to the customers.

The exhibition-cum-sale of silk handloom fabrics is being jointly organised under the aegis of the Development Commissioner of Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, and the National Handloom Development Corporation.

The centre plans to extend the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) to textile artisans. The move aims to support artisans who are leaving the skills and joining the unskilled labour force, as the latter provides better wages. It is a step to boost to the handloom industry in India.

Santosh Gangwar, Union minister for textiles said that they are considering extending the MNREGS to the handloom weavers and artisans of the textile sector, so that they or their younger generation are not forced to take up jobs under MNREGS which offers better wages.

Textile traders and weavers have collectively decided to implement the form system to curb the rising cases of defaults in the country's biggest man-made fabric (MMF) industry.

If a trader in the textile market wishes to buy unfinished fabrics from weavers, he will have to fill in his phone number, address proof and other details in a form and also provide a passport-sized photograph to them.

The 15th Handloom day was celebrated in Manipur yesterday, the celebration was attended by Minister of Commerce and Industries Govindas Konthoujam. Manipur was the front runner in promoting textile industries in the north east.
 
'The North East Textile Promotion Scheme was launched last year to promote handloom products of North East in which state Manipur took the main initiative said Minister Govindas while speaking on the occasion of observing the Handloom Day at GM Hall.
 

TN govt to distribute free machineries to improve proficiency of weavers

The Tamil Nadu state has nearly 2.69 lakh weavers, the government keen on welfare of weavers has planned to provide machineries to improve the proficiency of weavers and raise the quality of their products.
 
State minister for handloom and textiles S Gokula Indira on Tuesday after inaugurating the special ‘aadi’ in Madurai said that this year the government is keen on distributing 25,000 pirn winding machines and 2,500 pneumatic lifting machines to weavers. The machines would go a long way in improving the working conditions of the weavers.
