Pakistan local jute industry that reliant on imported jute from Bangladesh likely to face serious crisis if the export ban imposed by Bangladesh without forewarning is not lifted immediately. Jute product makers have urged the government to convince Bangladesh into lifting a ban on its fiber exports, stating that it is hurting the local industry.

Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC), Bangladesh Jute Spinners Association (BJSA) and Bangladesh Jute Mills Association (BJMA) hailed the government decision for imposing a month-long ban on raw jute export aiming to make the implementation of the Mandatory Use of Jute Product Labeling Law (MJPL) 2010 a success.

The ban has been slapped to increase supply of the fibre for local jute bag and sack-makers, an official at the Ministry of Textile and Jute (MoTJ) said.

Jute plants are growing rapidly due to the timely rain and sunlight, ideal conditions which is available this year. Farmers in Jamalpur district are likely to see bumper production of jute, according to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).

The farmers have brought 44,868 hectares of land under jute cultivation in the district this year and four varieties of jute have been cultivated in the district with a production target of 4,82,201 bales of jute.
