Ethiopian govt to sell all its shares in companies jointly owned begins with Saygin Dima Textile Factory

The Ethiopian government sells all of its shares in the Saygin Dima Textile Factory S.C. to its Turkish private sector partner company Saygin. The Turkish company will pay 563 million Br over five years for 90pc of the value of the government's share.

The Privatization & Public Enterprises Supervising Agency (PPESA), established the textile factory in partnership with Turkish investors in 2009, with a capital of 78.5 million dollars. Originally, the government owned 60pc of the company, while Saygin, a Turkish company, owned the remaining 40pc.

As the number of companies engaged in the textile industry has been increasing, the Ethiopian Textiles Industry Development Institute plans to set up a national enterprise that will help create linkage between cotton producers and textile industries.

Institute Director-General, Sileshi Lemma, said that the Enterprise will have the mandate to purchase, sell and store raw cotton. It is aimed at addressing challenges related to shortage of raw material supply.

This will help realize the country's plan to make the nation a preferable destination for textile companies.

The Fashion Designers' Association of Nigeria (FADAN), Lagos Chapter has proposed a production hub which is going to be like a meeting point for key players. To build the production hub in Lagos the association would require about N150 million.

Mr Kolawole Kuddus, the State Coordinator of the association, said that the production hub would also include a retail store that would display finished clothing items and accessories made by Nigerian fashion designers and pattern makers.
