PolyU, or the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, is all set to endorse and promote green and healthy textiles and in its endeavour to make this happen, it has signed a collaborative agreement with Wuyi University, China.

The diversified textile manufacturer has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Polartec, a global brand that develops performance textiles for outdoor and military apparel, from Versa Capital Management.

The acquisition is expected to close this month. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Teijin develops 100 percent recycled cotton-like polyester yarn

Teijin Frontier, the Teijin Group’s fibres and products converting company, has developed a new cotton-like high-performance polyester material for athleisure fashion.

The new material has been developed to combine the look and texture of cotton with superior properties for moisture absorption, quick drying and UV protection. Notably, the cotton-like features are achieved with polyester filament yarn, not a staple fibre. What’s more, Teijin Frontier’s new material is eco-friendly because it is made with recycled raw materials.

Toray Industries has created a new nylon textile using the textile manufacturer’s NanoDesign technology. Despite using a DWR treatment (with lower environmental cost), the latest innovation from the giant delivers high water repellency.

How? The textile’s structure has microscopic slits running lengthwise on the yarn. Water-repelling treatments fill these slits below the outside diameter of the yarn, also making the treatment more abrasion-resistant.

How many times have you seen a headline around “smart clothing” or “wearable tech” and you’ve been disappointed that the product doesn’t look so wearable at all? Personally, I don’t have enough fingers to count the amount, quite honestly. Despite being sold as "wearable", much of the time, wearable tech is cumbersome and awkward, and never really works as intuitively as you'd like.
