Maharashtra government to open up new market opportunities with higher remuneration for cotton farmers has worked out an integrated model of textile and agro industries in Vidarbha and Marathwada, said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday performing the bhoomipujan for the units of J K Investors Ltd and Raymond Group of Companies at Nandgaon Peth in Amravati.

In the wake of the Make in Maharashtra slogan – a toddler initiative adapted from Make in India, the Government of Maharashtra plans to accelerate the textile sector of the state which is the largest employer and covers the largest area of around 41.92 per cent under cultivation for cotton.

The Maharashtra government, which has already announced 14 textile parks in the state, has invited businessmen to invest in the sector through its initiative. The state also plans to set up 10 new mega textile hubs and new garment park at Solapur and Nagpur.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in a meeting with National Textile Corporation (NTC) official a fortnight ago made it clear that the government would help NTC shut its mills in Mumbai and develop the land, provided it set up textile units in Amravati. The condition is to set up the mills there, operationalize them and only then would the government allow NTC to commercially exploit its land in Mumbai.

The decision likely to be opposed by political satraps in Satara, Sangli, Solapur and Ichalkaranji who have interests in the textile industry in these regions.

The four sick textile units - three from Mumbai and one from Solapur are to be relocated to Nandgaonpeth textile zone in Amravati. The Nandgaonpeth textile zone has been allocated 40 hectares land and is located 17km from Amravati on National Highway 6. This move is likely to give the much-needed push to Vidarbha's cotton economy.

The four units which are to be relocated are Mumbai's Indu Mill, Poddar Mill and Tata Textiles and Barshi Textile Mills of Solapur.

The Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis plans to develop Vidarbha as the biggest textile hub of India as he believes that farmer’s problems will not resolve with just one time financial package. There has to be alternate avenues to channelize their cotton and ensure higher remunerations long term.
The state government is going to announce a special package for Vidarbha next week to promote cotton based industries in the region.
