‘Mahakhadi’-state govt initiative for handlooms

In an initiative of the Maharashtra State government to make the specific handloom industry a peoples’ movement once again and encourage the sector through new marketing tactics, the Maharashtra State Khadi and Village Industries Board (MSKVIB) has rebranded khadi as ‘MahaKhadi’ to A ‘MahaKhadi Yatra’.

MSKVIB deputy CEO Bipin Jagtap said that rebranding seemed to be the perfect solution to attract youngsters and take khadi products to the international market.

The Maharashtra state government has relaxed the condition of obtaining unique identity number (UID) for availing the state’s schemes, simplifying the process for textile projects.

The state's Co-operation, Textiles and Marketing Department issued a notification on January 29 relaxing the mandatory condition of obtaining UID to avail the schemes implemented by the government.

The Maharashtra state government has approved the policy in-principle designed by Suresh Halwankar, BJP MLA from Ichalkaranji and it is now being discussed at the secretary level as it is a major cotton producer and processor in the country. However, the final call on the proposed textile policy would be taken only after September 11.

The policy is expected to attract investments worth Rs 80,000 crore. The investment will come in the form of new machines, setting up of clusters and infrastructure provision.

The Maharashtra state government considering the massive unrest amongst the farmers in drought-hit region of Vidarbha, Marathwada and some parts of northern Maharashtra has taken the decision to expand the textile hub policy to nine districts across the state to override the farmers suicides in cotton growing belt.

The decision to accord textile industry has taken as it is second most important status after agriculture. The districts which have been shortlisted for developing into textile hubs are Yavatmal, Buldhana, Amravati, Jalna, Parbhani, Nanded, Aurangabad, Beed and Jalgaon.
