Hoang Ve Dung, Deputy General Director of the Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex) at a meeting with media on December 21 said that the Free trade agreements (FTAs) will give momentum to attract foreign direct investment enterprise to inject money in Vietnam while boosting domestic production.

Cecilia Malmström signed the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on 02 December 2015, after nearly 3 years with 14 rounds of negotiations.

A conference entitled Garment and Textile – Opportunities and Challenges, focusing on integration was held in Ha Noi yesterday as the development of Vietnam's garment and textile industry was behind other countries. Moreover, many domestic garment and textile companies would face more challenges from large rivals following integration.

Tran Quang Nghi, chairman of the National Garment and Textile Group (Vinatex), speaking at the conference said that a shortage of capital and backwards technology, along with weak management capacities, had created difficulties for the businesses.

The ASEAN - Korea Free Trade Agreement (AKFTA) led to a significant growth in Vietnam's textile and garment industry. According to its open-access commitment, Vietnamese textile and garment products that satisfy certificate of origin norms will enjoy zero tariffs once the agreement takes effect from January 1, 2016. Currently, Vietnamese firms pay a tax of 8 to 13 percent.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung is scheduled to leave for Kazakhstan on Thursday to attend the signing ceremony for the Vietnam – EEU Free Trade Agreement, according to Dau Tu (Investment) newspaper. One such trade pact is the FTA between Vietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union, which is slated for signing by the end of this month.

The EEU consists of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Russia.

At the Pakistan-Turkey Business Forum attended by the prime ministers of both countries, the Board of Investment on Thursday announced that a ‘Turkish Exclusive Special Economic Zone’ would be established in Pakistan.

Turkish PM Ahmet Davutoglu said that the investors from his country can invest in Pakistan’s textile, energy, transportation, agriculture and other sectors.
