The Vietnamese textile industry’s export value under the current planning was targeted to reach US$20 billion by 2020, but the figure exceeded $27 billion in 2015 and is expected to hit $31 billion this year. From 2010 to 2015, the industry had stable growth of export value of 15 per cent per year.
In the first half of this year, its garment and textile exports have reached $12.6 billion, representing a 4.72 percent year-on-year increase and accounting for 41 percent of the sector’s target for 2016.

Free trade agreements (FTAs) to create many opportunities and conditions in developing markets to garment, textile, leather and footwear industries as well as challenges due to origin rules for textiles and garments, said Ho Thi Kim Thoa, deputy minister of industry and trade.

Meanwhile, Phan Chi Dung, deputy head of the light industry department, said the textile, garment, leather, footwear, milk and paper industries have seen large billings for their exports, but materials for their production have been mainly imported.

As cotton textile exports have declined 7.39% in August 2015 as compared to the corresponding month last year, Indian textile exporters have urged the government to facilitate free trade agreements (FTAs) with major importing countries including the European Union, Australia and Canada to remove trade barriers.

The government of India as it revives its push for bilateral deals to corner a greater share of the export market is reworking its strategy on free trade agreements (FTAs). Rules of origin are at the heart of these agreements as they are meant to check routing of third-party goods via countries with which an agreement is signed.

Over the years, India has insisted on a system where at least 30-35% value addition takes place in a country with which it signs a trade agreement. In addition, there has to be a change of heading, which means yarn should be finished into a product.

Vietnam textile and garment sector having witnessed good growth in exports in 2014 up by nearly 16 percent reaching $24.5 billion is now aiming at total exports of US$ 28 billion to $28.5 billion in 2015.

The textile and garment sector is expected to benefit from several free trade agreements (FTAs) that are likely to take effect. Owing to advantages accruing from the FTAs, the textile industry could double the size of production in ten years. However, textile enterprises need to be well prepared for the same.
