China maintains yarn import momentum from India, doubles volume

The recovery in spun yarn exports is here to stay. Continuing with the significant rebound in June, July too posted a higher growth. Export grew sharply by 35 per cent in volume terms while the rise in value term was 16 per cent. The growth again emerged from the retained momentum of imports of yarns by China from India. For the second month in a row, China’s import of Indian spun yarn jumped in July. However, overall unit value realization continued to inch down hovering in the range of US$2.93-2.96 per kg on an average.

Cotton yarn export rises this June

In June 2015, India exported cotton yarn to 72 countries with volumes at 92 million kg which was worth US$275 million (INR1,740 crore). The average unit price realization was at US$2.98 a kg, down US cent 1 from previous month and US cents 54 down from the same month a year ago. The largest importer of cotton yarn from India was China, followed way behind by Bangladesh and Egypt. The top three together accounted for more than 60 per cent of cotton yarn with combined volume at 60 million kg worth US$170 million.

China has started buying more spun yarns from India, June exports rebound

Spun yarn imports from India have rebounded in the past month in China, reveals the latest “ YnFx - Fibre and yarn Exports - India Report. Yarn export to China was extremely sluggish since May 2014 falling year on year and saw some rebound in May 2015. In June 2015, exports jumped 105 per cent in volume and 80 per cent in value.

Cotton yarn exports from India have been dwindling month after month, posting 13 months of fall in year on year comparison. And this fall has been called upon by industry body the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council as “matter of deep concern”. It has pointed that the withdrawal of Focus Market Scheme for Cotton yarns was also the cause of steep decline in exports to non-conventional markets like African countries like Peru, Morocco etc.

Export price of spun yarns have been falling since June 2014 and continued into December. Close to 135 million kg of spun yarns were exported worth US$398 million or Rs 2,470 crore. Compared to last year, volumes were up 9 per cent while earnings in US$ term fell 4 per cent implying a 12 per cent fall in unit price realization, as the Rupee appreciated 0.6 per cent against the US$ in the comparable months. Overall unit price realization averaged US$2.95 /kg was, down US cents 3 from previous month and US cents 39 from December 2013.

A weaker rupee and steady demand from China and US had helped the textiles exports in the past year. From April, demand for raw material like yarn from China has fallen dramatically and inventory levels have risen. Further, falling cotton ribre prices have been asserting pressure on yarn pricing and cutting unit value realisation, although rupee continues to remain weak.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade lastest data reveals that traders have registered contracts to export 93.54 million kg of cotton yarn in August, 8% lower than a year before and compared with 98.81 million kg in July, The registration of cotton yarn export contracts had hit 1,415 million kg in 2013-14, compared with 1,067 million kg a year before.

Putting off cotton buying only solution to foresee price lower in near future by textile mills

Textiles mills and spinners has decided put off buying cotton and has taken to wait-and-watch approach to stocking the commodity, as they feel that when new crop arrives in a couple of month, supply will improve and prices will drop.
 

Cotton prices likely to see mixed trading in India

Cotton prices may trade on a mixed note. Forecast of below normal rains, lower sowing, demand from the millers and declining supplies may give support to the prices. However, higher production, lower cotton yarn exports, global demand concerns and comfortable supplies may pressurize prices at higher levels.
 
However, concerns over global demand coupled with higher output last year and weak cotton yarn exports to China capped sharp gains. NCDEX Kapas as well as MCX Cotton futures settled 0.4% and 0.1% higher.
