Cotton yarn likely to meet its exports target of $4.70 billion for FY14

India ‘s cotton yarn to meet its exports target for 2013-14 in spite of seasonal flux usually seen every April and high raw cotton prices as per the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (Texprocil’s) study. Cotton yarn exports are expected to be around 1,350 million kgs valued at $4.70 billion.
According to Texprocil statistics India’s cotton yarn exports in the first 10 months (April-January ) valued at $3.75 billion (around 1,082 million kgs). It is estimated that yarn exports for the entire 2013-14 would reach at $4.70 billion (around 1,350 million kgs).

In response to the increasing demand from China for both cotton and yarn over the past three years, many cotton yarn spinning mills in India increased their production capacities to meet the rising demand, are facing tough challenge today as change in Chinese policy hits India’s cotton exports.
After witnessing a remarkable rise in yarn exports in 2013 over 2012, from 77 million kg of yarn export to 1,107 mn kg and anticipating a consistently high demand from China, the spinning mills in India have added a combined 500,000 spindles in the past five years.

Indian textile industry together with including cotton yarn is facing dual challenge with the Indian rupee appreciating while there is depreciation in the Chinese currency against the dollar. In this situation, textile exports in the international market are jeopardize as buyers are preferring Chinese products due to price advantage, on the other hand orders which have been coming in are at lower prices, while cotton prices are on the higher side.
Southern textile mills facing slow down in cotton yarn exports

The southern textile mills after having done well for the last 10 month of the year in cotton yarn exports is facing a slow down in February-March due to drop in demand. However, the demand has not fallen sharply and expected to revive in April or after the elections.
According to Industry sources, on an average 120 million kg of cotton yarn was exported a month from the country for 10 months from April last year which is now reduced. China who had increased purchase in December and January has slowed down in February.

Spun yarn exports were unable to maintain its strength seen in January as they grew just 3.7 per cent in February as against 21 per cent clocked in the previous month. About 117 million kg of spun yarns were exported worth US$390 million or Rs 2,425 crore during February. In terms of growth, volumes were up 7.4 per cent while US$ value increased 3.7 per cent implying a fall in unit price realization, as the Rupee depreciated 16 per cent against the US$ in the comparable months.
