Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta speaking at the launch of Uasin Gishu county infrastructure machines in Eldoret, said that the government is set to invest Ksh600m to revive the Rift Valley Textile factory in Eldoret which would help create job opportunities for the youth.

Kenyatta further said that developing the country without discrimination was his main priority, despite the latest opinion poll outcome indicating that a majority of Kenyans were dissatisfied with his administration.

The Kenyan government will be spending 680 million Shilling ($6.8 million) to revive, expand and purchase equipment to facilitate operations at the Rift Valley Textile Mills (Rivatex) in Eldoret town, Uasin-Gishu County, Deputy President William Ruto said.

The deputy president urged investors to take advantage of emerging business opportunities in the country to initiate development projects. The project is being spearheaded by Moi University.

U.S. imports of synthetic apparel surpasses over cotton garments, as of total 19.43 billion square-meter equivalents of apparel shipped to the United States through September this year, 9.87 billion clothing are made of man made fibers like polyester and viscose, according to the latest U.S. government data.

The cotton industry's fears that cotton is losing the battle to man made fibers as yarn mills have switched spindles to polyester and its cohorts due to years of high cotton prices and improving synthetic technology.

Sino Zim plans to take on cotton farming

Sino Zimbabwe Cotton are currently in negotiations with a local company with an intention to purchase of at least 35 000 hectares of land because they are intending to venture into cotton farming. But Sino Zim is going to continue funding contract farming.

The company plans to increase cotton seed and lint output to 35 000 metric tonnes at its $17 million plant commissioned by President Robert Mugabe in December last year hence its decision to venture into cotton farming.

Delay in the cotton sowing will result in the late harvesting. The sowing process, which was to be completed by end of May, will finish now by the end of June. The target set for cotton sowing is eight million acres, while the farmer till to date have sown cotton-seeds at about 60 to 65 percent land only.

Farmers might not be able sow the seed on the rest of 35 to 40 percent land by the end of June and are expected to sow cotton at 7.2 acre to 7.4 acre of land in the new season.
