Egypt plans to increase its cotton growth over coming year

The Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation of Egypt has announced that this year it is planning to allocate 367,566 feddans for cotton cultivation. The cotton-cultivated area last agricultural season was 367,566 feddans; however, the cotton was grown in only 250,000 of 350,000 feddans projected.

In a statement, the ministry said that the projected area was announced in an official report issued by the General Administration for Pest Control. The report was then proposed to the Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Farid Abo Hadid.

Constant demand for cotton leading to rising trend in prices

The constant demand from leading spinners for quality cotton has maintained rising trend in lint prices. However, on the other hand slow arrivals of phutti (seed cotton) have kept trade volume from gaining momentum.

Consequently, there is constant rise in phutti prices which resulted in higher lint prices. The Punjab variety cotton is mostly being quoted between Rs6,800 to Rs7,300 per maund and phutti prices in the range of Rs3,000 to Rs4,000 per 40 kg.

The Zimbabwean government targeting to increase cotton output from 140,000 tonnes last year to 180,000 tonnes this cropping season expecting increase in local demand, Zimbabwean news agency New Ziana reported.

Strategies for reviving the textile industry and value addition and financing from the banking sector are expected to boost local demand for cotton and production.

However, Zimbabwe may fail to meet its target of producing 180,000 tonnes of cotton this year due to shortage of agricultural inputs and late onset of rains, an official said Friday.

New cotton spinning mill coming up at Bunkie in Louisiana

Good news for the cotton industry, Gulf Coast Spinning Co., plans to invest $130 million in a new cotton spinning facility on 43.5 acres at the Bunkie Industrial Park, in central Louisiana. Construction will begin in mid-2014.

The plant is the second phase of a project that included the opening of a Zagis USA spinning facility in Lacassine that employs 79 people in Jefferson Davis Parish. The Zagis mill costs $20 million.

At 500,000 square feet, the Bunkie cotton spinning mill will hire more than 200 employees by the end of 2015 and 307 people in 2016, according to the newspaper.

Cotton industry developing new program to push best practice

A new program is put together by the cotton industry on the core principle that cotton growing is consistent with sustainability, the use of best practice and traceability in the supply chain, was put across by Adam Kay CEO of Cotton Australia and Mark Messura from Cotton International.

They want to convince cotton users that they should be confident that the raw material is responsibly produced and identified.

Unlike the bad old days, cotton growing now uses 40 per cent less water, 90 per cent less insecticide and 30 per cent less land is required to grow the same amount of cotton.

Sino Zim targets 17 percent rise in output of cotton Seed

SINO Zimbabwe Cotton Holdings expects an increase in seed production now with the US$17 million ginning and spinning plant having officially opened and functional in December last year. The plant has two sections namely the ginnery and the spinning where an increase in seed production is certain.
