Limited demand for cotton kept prices unmoved on Friday. This time about 32,000 bales (of 170 kg each) of the fibre arrived in Gujarat and 1 lakh bales across the country.

According to traders, mostly domestic mills were buying at this time and export demand was very nominal. This time, cotton price may rule in the coming days as fresh demand might be hard to obtain.

Gujarat Sankar-6 cotton traded at Rs.43,800-44,000 for a candy of 356 kg. B grade cotton stood at Rs.41,000-42,000 and lower grade cotton was quoted at Rs.36,000-37,000.

The cotton market kept prices steady on Tuesday with the fresh buying interest at lower level, where some needy spinners moved in to reload their stocks.

Small millers who are mostly dependent on local supplies are disappointed with the shortage of quality lint. Most millers were keen to build upon their cotton stocks at current prices as hopes that the flow of phutti (seed cotton) would improve are fading.

Floor brokers said that big spinners have already imported around 1.7 million bales, but small spinners with cash flow problem are largely dependent on domestic supplies.

The US Department of Agriculture in its long-term projection has stated that the cotton imports by China, the top grower and consumer of the fibre, will plunge for further two seasons, in 2014-15, it will plunge from 22% to 8.6m tonnes, and again the following season to 7.5m tonnes due to its huge inventories, but purchases will stage a recovery, leading "rapid" growth in world trade.

The decline, driven by a change in Chinese farm support is likely to end the country's record of stockpiling cotton at prices well above international market rates, will pull world trade lower next season.

Pak-Afghan Cotton Ginners Association to be established, the suggestion came up at the meeting held between the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association, chairman Mukhta Ahmed Khan Baloch and Afghan ginners, on Saturday in Pakistan to discuss the possibilities and viabilities of cotton sowing and ginning industry.

The suggestion to establish was put forward during the meeting to which the Afghan delegation gave their approval. The delegation appreciated the PCGA role, stating that they would form Afghan Cotton Ginners Association (ACGA) immediately.

Cotton futures eased on Thursday in heavy trading, receding from the 6-month highs, beleaguered from the rolling of closely-watched commodities index funds. Volumes were heavy throughout the session as traders moved positions from the March contract into May.

The most-active May cotton contract on ICE Futures U.S. edged down 0.27 cent, or 0.3 percent, to settle at 88.58 cents a lb.
The spot March contract fell more sharply, finishing down 0.77 cent, or 0.9 percent, at 87.60 cents a lb.

The proposal for Tamil Nadu Cotton Cultivation Mission to increase cotton product in the state budget 2014-15 would go a long way in achieving self sufficiency in commodity's production in the state, industry said today.
