Tamilnadu Handloom Weavers' Co-operative Society Ltd., (Co-optex) organized an interactive session on ‘Vintage Kancheevarams’ on Saturday, where textile enthusiasts from the city came together and discussed saris that were more than five decades old and the Kancheepurams silk sari’s new avatar.

The highlight of an exhibition organized as a part of the ‘Vintage Kanjeevarams’ interaction were silk saris developed specially by Cooptex in the colours and designs popularised by the legendary singer M.S. Subbulakshmi on the occasion of her birth centenary celebrations.

The Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers’ Co-operative Society Limited popularly known as “Co-optex”is serving its nationwide customers for the past 80 years through 200 showrooms across India is eyeing the youth to achieve sales target of Rs365 crore for the Deepavali season.

Cooptex has launched 300 new varieties of organic silk sarees and T-shirts for the Deepavali season being sold in 11 co-optex centres in the state and these were low in cost compared to other silk sarees, said Cooptex Chairman Manohan.

Sreemathy Mohan, a textile enthusiast conducted textile walk through the lesser known facts about the shopping hub of Pondy Bazaar as part of the Madras Week celebrations on Saturday, the walk began at Co-Optex. Starting with the organisation that was started in 1935 with a presentation on the array of silks, cotton and yardage available there--- from the Kancheepuram silks to the Arani variety and Madurai Sungudi, the participants were also given an insight into how they could differentiate between the sarees made using handlooms and power looms.

Tamil Nadu Handloom Development Corporation, popularly known as Co-optex in a bid to take its finest products to a larger numbers of customers across the globe is all set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with 8-year-old Flipkart, an e-commerce major.

T.N. Venkatesh, Managing Director, Co-optex, on Saturday after inaugurating the renovated ‘Gandhimathi Co-optex Showroom’ at Tirunelveli Junction said that they plan to sign the MoU with Flipkart on May 15 with the objective of taking their products to a larger customer base through this online shopping firm.

The State owned Tamilnadu Weavers Cooperative Society (Co-Optex) has joined the bandwagon this season. The Vellore unit of Co-Optex has put up a six-day exhibition of summer dress materials under the theme of ‘Cool Comforts’ at the Town Hall, which has caught the attention of locals.

According to the regional manager N Karthikeyan Nair, this is the first time Co-Optex has launched the ‘summer sales drive’ through an exhibition in Vellore. He said that hundreds of varieties of specially made summer fabric to ward off heat were being exhibited.

TN govt grants Rs.14 lakh to help Coopex bring back traditional saree

The Tamil Nadu government has sanction Rs 14 lakh to state-run Cooptex, a Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers’ Co-operative Society to help them move ahead with the plan to revive primal traditional saree varieties of Tamil Nadu.

There are very few weavers skilled in making traditional sarees of Tamil Nadu like Kandangi, Sungudi, Chinnalampatti and Koorai Nadu that were popular decades ago. Efforts are on to identify such craftsmen and convince them to start weaving back these traditional sarees for Cooptex.

Cooptex declares 'dothi' day to promote handloom industry

Cooptex, the state handloom weaver's cooperative society had declared Friday as Veshti Day with the idea for promoting the handloom industry, prompting all male employees in government offices to go to work in traditional attire consisting of the white shirt and veshti.

Cooptex officials said that they were encouraged by the tremendous response they received from the public. The sales in the past one week is double that of the previous year, said G Rajasekaran, regional manager, Cooptex, Coimbatore.
