VN garment industry eyes to achieve $34b export target

Le Tien Truong, general director of the Vietnam National Garment and Textile Group (Vinatex), speaking at a meeting on reporting Vinatex’s results of production and business in Ha Noi on Tuesday said that to achieve the target of more than 10 percent growth in 2018, the textile and garment industry must make great efforts to focus further on solutions to increase labour productivity also the local textile and garment industry must be careful with the anti-dumping story.

As the average export growth rate in August and September indicates the target is achievable, another $8 billion worth of exports is needed before the year end.

Vietnam’s garment and textiles export in the first half of the year grew 11.3 percent year-on-year to 14.58 billion USD, outstripping its competitors in garment export growth in the period. The country earned 6 billion USD from exports to the US, surging nearly 9 percent, 2.3 billion USD from shipments to the EU, up 8 percent and 1.5 billion USD from Japan, up 12 percent. But according to experts the growth has not been sustainable yet.

The Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex) has been urged to undertake comprehensive reform to develop its production and business. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s message was conveyed on June 20 to Vinatex by a working group led by Government Office Chairman Mai Tien Dung.

Dung, speaking at a working session with the group in Hanoi, said that Vinatex had undergone many reforms and achieved developments in technology, management and jobs for 80,000 workers. However, the group had been experiencing difficulties in the export market since 2016.

The state-run Vietnam National Textile And Garment Group (Vinatex) General director Le Tien Tuong said that the group strives to push up production by 14 percent compared to last year. The group will make the effort to increase export turnover by 11 percent and import turnover by 9 percent. To complete the goal, Vinatex will focus on expanding its markets more especially key markets such as the US, EU, and Japan.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe in Ha Noi.
