Richard Wool, director of the Affordable Composites from Renew Resources (ACRES) program at University of Delaware Chemical Engineering (UD) is working with his team to develop a breathable yet water resistant leather-like substitute dubbed “Eco-Leather,” made from a combination of natural fibers like cotton and flax with plant oils.

According to Wool, developing a leather substitute manufacturing facility in Delaware could be an economic boon by providing a new option in the half-trillion dollar leather and fashion markets.

China the world’s top cotton producer in 1980s adopted plastic mulch technology, domestic agrotechnicians hailed it as a "white innovation." As film-mulched cotton fields have higher soil temperatures and conserve more moisture than normal land due to the greenhouse effect, which improves seeding, growth and yield. After 30 years of fanatical use of mulch films and inadequate attention to the problems of film residue, agrotechnicians said that the country's cotton fields have been hit hard by plastic pollution.

India cotton prices have recovered by 10 per cent since they bottomed in the first week of December at around Rs 18,500 a bale. Robust demand has supported the price. Export numbers suggests till mid-January, 5.5 million bales have been exported. This means 65 per cent of the total estimated exports of 8.5-9 million bales have been achieved in the first four months of the season. As against this, arrivals have been one-third of the total expected crop of 37.5 million bales during the same period. Clearly, higher demand has driven the prices since December.

GGCL restores gas supply to South Gujarat textile processing units

The Gujarat Gas Company Limited (GGCL) which earlier had told its industrial consumers that the gas cut would remain in force till January 31, has informed its customers in Surat, Ankleshwar and Bharuch that the gas supply has been restored from Friday and that the supply will become normal from Saturday.

SGTPA president Jitu Vakharia said that they are thankful to the state government and the GGCL management for looking into their concerns and restoring the gas supply at the earliest. They will meet the company management to bring a long-term solution to the gas supply issue.
