Pakistan textile and clothing export has touched $10.384 billion in the first nine months of the current fiscal year (July-March period), a growth of seven percent over the corresponding period last year as per Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. The increased growth was seen mainly due to rise in export of raw cotton and low value-added products. Raw cotton export witnessed an extensive growth of 43.48percent.

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, which met under the Chairmanship of the Federal Minister for Finance Mohammad Ishaq Dar last week, has decided to withdraw SRO 15(I)/2010, which exempted cotton yarn import from custom duty of 5 percent, in order to check import of cotton yarn.

The value added textile, which contributes around 80 percent to Pakistan’s overall textile exports, has expressed disappointment on the withdrawal of the duty exemption on cotton yarn import as it would negatively affect the export of value-added textiles from Pakistan.

Machine made carpet exports from Turkey on rise, in the first quarter of 2014 its carpet exports has exceed US$0.5 billion. According to the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporter Association ((ITKIB), machine made carpet exports has increased by 9.9 percent to $546 million in first quarter of 2014 in comparison to $497 million in the same period last year.

At present, Turkey stands to be the second largest carpet exporter with $2.2 billion worth of exports beside China’s all time record of $2.4 billion of carpet exports annually, short by 1.09 percent.
