MEG price dives across all regions

Asian MEG markers fell US$34 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the first week of January.

In China, offers fell to US$590 a ton, and central negotiations softened to US$580-585 a ton.

Mono ethylene glycol prices fell in Asian markets on weak futures and aggressive selling. Falling Futures subsequently dragged down both physical forward and prompt prices for both H2 July and H1 August.

A few MEG units in Asia are likely to reduce the term supply in January as polyester producers will cut down MEG contract volume for 2016.

Paraxylene price sinks on weak energy complex

Asian paraxylene prices fell US$20.83 a ton FOB Korea and CFR Taiwan/China in the first week of January.

Yisheng Petrochemical and ExxonMobil fixed their contract price at US$750 a ton. Isomer-grade mixed xylene inched were at US$614 a ton FOB Korea and US$642 a ton CFR Taiwan.

Paraxylene prices plunged in Asian markets tracking the rapidly weakening energy complex. Demand was also insipid but there was a slight recovery weekend on rise in mixed xylene cost.

January Asian contract price was also settled partially down.

Central Silk Board to take measures for boosting silk cultivation

A team from the Central Silk Board (CSB), a statutory body under the Union ministry of textiles, visited various pockets in mineral-rich Keonjhar district of Odisha recently and assured farmers of all help and insurance coverage to boost silk cultivation there.

The team assured the farmers of providing technical knowhow to increase yield of cocoons and yarns.

The team was accompanied by silk growers where they visited several plantation sites under Ghatagaon, Patana and Harichandanpur blocks.

Nylon yarn prices continue downtrend in China

In China, semi-dull FDY70D/24F prices were down US cents 2-4 a kg while FDY40D were down US cents 3 a kg (due to weak Yuan).

Nylon DTY 70D/24F prices fell US cents 6 a kg. DTY 30D/10F prices rolled on the week.

Monofilament 30D prices were stable while 1.5D staple fiber declined US cents 4 a kg on the week.

Nylon filament yarn markets in Asia continued to trend in weakness on falling operating pressure due to softening of caprolactum and semi-dull nylon chip prices.

Caprolactum prices plunge amid weak demand

Asian markers, the SE and FE markers fell US$60 a ton in the first week of January.

In China, liquid good offers in spot market edged down US$65 a ton on the week with selling indications at US$1,460 a ton, delivered. Solid goods fell US$95 a ton.

Sinopec retained its January contract nomination at US$1,570 a ton for liquid goods while DSM Nanjing was at US$1,575 a ton for liquid goods and US$1,610 a ton for solid goods.

Caprolactum prices eased that week on languishing demand, cheaper raw material and expectation of increase in supply.

Cotton output of Pakistan down by 33.5pc

According to the report issued by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association on Monday, Seed cotton (Phutti) equivalent to 9.475 million tonnes or 9,475,729 bales have reached ginneries across Pakistan as of January 15, 2016 registering a shortfall of 33.5 per cent compared to 14.251m bales a year earlier.

This shortfall would inflict a loss of around $6 billion on GDP — of which $1.5bn would be suffered by cotton growers and $4.5bn by the industry and exporters, experts say.

Blended yarn price falls in China, up in India

In Qianqing, PC (65/35) 32s yarn prices fell US cents 6 a kg in the first week of January while 45s PC combed yarn prices were down US cents 4 a kg.

Blended yarn prices moved in line with the past changes in fibre prices while firm cotton prices supported yarn makers.

In China, cotton yarn prices have dropped 5-7% in US$ terms, with lower counts of PC yarn prices even experiencing a double-digit fall. PSF and VSF prices have more sharply fallen in the meantime.

In India, firm cotton prices pushed PC yarn prices up while the rise was limited by the drop in PSF prices.

Viscose yarn price slips due to weak currency in China

In China, mainstream prices of 40s compact siro-spun yarn in Jiangsu were down US cents 3 a kg in the first week of January (due to weak Yuan) while 30s spun viscose in Xiaoshan fell US cents 5 a kg.

In China, spun viscose yarn prices stopped declining amid smooth liquidity. Offers for siro-spun yarn and compact & siro-spun yarn were unchanged on the week.

With previous stocks digested, some yarn makers saw sale/production ratios closer to 100% or slightly lower.

Indian textile stocks fetched positive ROI despite lean phase

The stocks of textile companies have performed well in the last one year. Of the 52 textile stocks, 43 stocks have fetched positive ROIs despite Indian textiles going through a lean phase since the last few years and the government’s measures have done little to help the industry’s cause.

The list of woes is also a long one - falling exports of cotton yarn and apparel, growing competition from China, negative impact of global economic slowdown, mounting inventories, lack of capital infusion for technology upgradation and volatile stock markets among others.
