Polyester markets close 2018 on a weak note

Polyester staple fibre (PSF) prices in December 2018 edged down in China and amid inactive buyers during year-end. In January 2019, producers may schedule turnarounds during the Spring Festival and thus may reduce supply in the market. Prices in India were down US cents 19 this month. In Pakistan, PSF offers were raised and hovered at high levels during the month.

PTA, MEG prices on downswing in Asian markets

Polyester intermediate, purified terephthalic acid (PTA) prices in Asia fell in the week ended 16 November 2018 in tandem with weak paraxylene cost, however supply was relatively tighter in the week amid plant shutdowns.

The average plant run rate in China fell to 69% in the week. However, China's Honggang Petrochemical is planning to build a second PTA unit with 2.4m tons per year of capacity at its Lianyungang site.

In US, PTA prices were firm in the week. In Europe, PTA prices rolled over during the week.

Polyester markets faced downward pressure in June

Ethylene prices in Asian markets inched up in June on expectations of increase in Chinese demand in the coming period. In Europe, spot ethylene prices rose sharply this month on cracker issues as maintenance was been conducted on the western portion of the ARG ethylene pipeline. In US, spot ethylene prices fell amid the recent restart of crackers after turnarounds and the start-ups of new capacity. Prices rose 4.2% from May in Asia while European spot inched up 1.9% on the month. US spot prices slipped 1.5% during the month.

MEG price slips on increased supply in Asia

Asian spot MEG prices fell US$30 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the last week of April. In China, offers for nearby-month cargoes was down US$30 a ton, with bids and discussions edging down lower.

Mono ethylene glycol prices in Asian markets plunged that week on increased supply in the region amid thin trading activity. Taiwan's Nan Ya shut its 460,000 tons per year MEG line on 2 May. China’s Sinopec Shanghai Petrochem is planning to shut its 380,000 tons per year MEG plant in June.

In US, MEG prices will face upward momentum in May from tightening supply.

Polyester market weakens in March, no support from upstream

Ethylene prices in Asian markets jumped in March supported by strong demand amid the heavy steam cracker turnarounds. In US, spot ethylene fell to a nine-year low on weak sentiment as production from new capacity has overtaken consumption amid downstream disruptions. European ethylene spot prices were almost flat for the month.

MEG prices rise in Asia

Asian spot MEG prices rose US$25 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the last week of January. In China, offers for nearby-month cargoes were up US$30 a ton during the week.

Mono ethylene glycol prices in Asia rose as stocking-up activities for post Chinese New Year requirements persisted.

In US, spot MEG prices were firm during the week.

European MEG spot price uptrend halted on muted demand during the week.

MEG price declines due to bearish sentiment in Asia

Asian spot MEG fell US$10 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia In the last week of September. In China, offers for nearby-month cargoes were down US$10 a ton during the week. Mono ethylene glycol prices in Asia were assessed lower as upstream market weakened this week.

Prices were also pulled down due to bearish sentiment and offloading of cargoes prior to the Golden Week holiday in China. China’s Sinopec Yanshan Petrochem had planned to shut MEG plant on 9th October which has a capacity of 70,000 tons a year.

MEG price softens amid ample supply in Asia

Asian spot MEG declined US$5 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the second week of August. Major mono-ethylene glycol producer MEGlobal announced its September MEG Asian Contract Price US$50 a ton higher than its August nomination.

MEG price edges up amid growing buying interest in Asia

Asian spot MEG inched up US$5 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the first week of August. In China, offers for nearby-month cargoes rebounded during the week. Mono ethylene glycol prices in Asia were firm amid moderate transactions with buying interest for low-priced goods growing somewhat. However, prices weakened by the end of the week while transaction of forward-month cargoes was moderate.

MEG price moves up in Asia

Asian spot MEG regained US$22 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the last week of June. In China, offers for nearby-month cargoes were up US$25 a ton on the week.

Mono ethylene glycol prices moved up early in the week in Asian markets but weakened after midweek and started to fluctuate in a narrow range as trading sentiment was good in early week, and stagnated in the second half. Transaction for August deliveries was thin, and prices were lower than spot values.
