Pakistan’s cotton yarn import from India up by 94% YoY

In December 2015, cotton yarn export was at 98.8 million kgs with 76 countries importing yarn worth US$266 million (INR1,760 crore) during the month. The average unit price realization was unchanged from November 2015, however, it was down US cents 26 as compared to December 2014.

China was the largest importer of cotton yarn from India in December, followed by Bangladesh and Pakistan. The top three together accounted for more than 57 per cent of cotton yarn exported from India during the month.

As per the latest data of Ministry of Textiles, India's exports of readymade garments jumped 33 per cent from INR72,592 crore in 2013-14 to INR96,523 crore in 2014-15. Experts opine that the stupendous uptrend will continue for the next three years. The expectation is based on three fundamentals. One, export incentives from the government, second, revival in demand from major markets such as US and Europe and, three, increase in manufacturing costs in China.

Export volume of spun yarns from India continue to grow in March 2015, while prices retreated compared to their year ago levels. At this price level, it appears that spun yarns made in India have become globally competitive, particularly of cotton. The fall in prices reflect the decline in raw fibre cost in India.

Spun yarn exports were up in February in terms of volumes but the fall in FOB per unit price, which apparently arrested in January, continued, leading to a sharp fall in revenue earnings. Volumes at over 122 million kg were worth US$355 million or Rs 2,190 crore, implying per unit realisation of US$2.90 per kg for all kinds of spun yarns. This was US cents 8 down from previous month and down US cents 45 from February 2014.
