Cotton price drops due to low demand

Cotton prices tumbled across markets in the last week of July with numbers plunging midweek on fears that China, the world’s largest purchaser of cotton, may continue having problems with its economy. The US weather forecast for the southern US are dry, which emerged as good news for the growing cotton crop.

Benchmark December Futures lost further US cent 0.43 per pound for the week and the near month October contract fell US cents 1.83. The Cotlook A index also lost US cents 0.80 per pound while the China Cotton Index inched down 20 Yuan a ton.

Spun yarn export from India to China back to 50 mn level in February

Exports to China has sprung back to over 50 million kg in February 2015 after hovering around 30-40 million from April to October and in January. In February, export of spun yarn to China jumped 19 per cent year on year in terms of value and 38 per cent in volumes. It imported 53.3 million kg of yarns worth US$140 million.

Six lakh bales of cotton fibre was shipped out of India in January 2015

Staple fibre shipments in January stood at 118 million kg, (cotton, ASF, PSF, VSF, PPSF and wool) worth INR1,125 crore or US$182 million. Cotton alone accounted for more than 90 per cent of all types of fibre exported during the month at 592,900 bales or 100.8 million kg worth US$157 million. Another 17 million kg of manmade fibres were also exported during the month worth US$25 million.

A high-level delegation from China, led by Wang Tiankai, president, China National Textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC) is on visit to India to explore the possibility of increasing trade between the two countries in textile sector. After recording a 108% increase in cotton and yarn imports from India in 2013 both India and China are hopeful that the volume of trade will increase in the coming years. The delegation is on a two-day visit to Coimbatore and had earlier visited New Delhi, Baroda and Mumbai and explored the trade opportunities in textile sector.
