Indian yarn export prices drop significantly in 2015

Spun yarn export earnings continued to decline (year-on-year) for the thirteenth consecutive month in May 2015 while volume shipment growth remained on positive territory for some months now. In May 2015, all kinds of spun yarn exports were up 2 per cent in terms of volume but down 11 per cent in terms of value as FOB per unit price fell 12 per cent. Volumes were at 101 million kg worth US$300 million or INR1,890 crore, implying an average unit realisation of US$2.97 per kg. This was down US cents 42 or 12.4 per cent from May 2014.

India export was worth US$363 million in 2014 to Greece while it imported US$131 million worth of goods from the crisis ridden European country. In textiles, exports were worth US$45 million and imports at a negligible US$3.3 million. Overall export fell dramatically to less than US$400 in 2012 when the crisis first erupted in Greece. Exports were worth US$800 in earlier years. All these numbers are apparently insignificant compared with overall trade numbers and thus will have negligible impact on direct trade between the two countries. Textile trade will remain almost immune.

Cotton yarn exports from India have been dwindling month after month, posting 13 months of fall in year on year comparison. And this fall has been called upon by industry body the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council as “matter of deep concern”. It has pointed that the withdrawal of Focus Market Scheme for Cotton yarns was also the cause of steep decline in exports to non-conventional markets like African countries like Peru, Morocco etc.

Polyester pricing has been on a sluggish mode ever since crude oil price began to dwindle with occasional peaks and troughs. In the week ended 19 June, polyester upstream feedstock, ethylene markets in Asia gave back earlier week’s gains as prices were dragged down by rising regional and deep-sea supplies. However, the price drop was limited by cracker shutdowns. Asian markers fell US$5-10 a ton week on week. Prices were down Euro14 a ton both on FD NWE and CIF NWE basis.

In early June, YnFx had predicted that cotton prices will remain subdued in June as global supply and demand volumes then pointed to sustained weakness while a number of factors were underpinning the recent improvement. As the month crossed its first half, cotton prices were depressed across major markets on ample supply amid poor demand.

Cotton yarn offers were unchanged amid poor sales volume in the week ended 12 June 2015. During the week, viscose yarn prices were range bound due to sluggish sales while spun polyester yarn prices dropped a bit on low demand.

Ethylene market was assessed flat as sluggish trading continued but prices were up in the week ended 12 June 2015 and the diverge trend continued between NE and SE Asia. European spot prices fell as bearish sentiment worked on both supply and demand while derivative, particularly LDPE saw its first fall in three months. In US, ethylene spot slipped as Dow resumes production at Louisiana facility.

Paraxylene prices drop for second consecutive week on weak demand

Paraxylene prices dropped for the second consecutive week in Asian markets in the week ended 22 May. However, prices were lifted week end as upstream and downstream prices were firmer. Meanwhile, JX nominated its June contract price at US$960 a ton. During the week, orthoxylene prices fell US$31 a ton CFR China and FOB Korea on weaker demand and alongside lower co-product. This led to Sinopec lowering its OX price by 200 Yuan a ton.

Wool prices rebound, recovers more than previous week’s loss

The Australian wool markets saw prices lifted over both sale days this week, more than recovering the previous week’s losses. The EMI was quoted up Aus cents 7 to close the week at Aus$12.42 a kg. A weaker Aus$, saw the EMI fall in US$ terms by US cents 20 to close at US$9.80.

In Melbourne, sales saw firmer levels on opening, with good buyer focus on the 19 through to 20 micron categories. Crossbreds continued their rally with gains across the 28 to 32 micron wools, while the 26 micron categories sold higher. Oddments continued to enjoy solid demand, pushing prices higher.

Cotton Futures record sharpest weekly decline in 6 months

Cotton futures on the ICE fell for the fifth straight session in the week of 22 May, ending their worst week in more than six months as stronger US$ continued to prompt speculator liquidation, though traders noted prices remained locked in a tight trading range. July contract settled down US cents 3.54 or 5.3 per cent n the week to US cents 63.30 per pound.
