Poor working conditions and low wages have long been a concern in Bangladesh’s garment industry, to protect garment workers Bangladesh will be extending an agreement into national regulations, promising more stringent safety checks for its 4 million apparel workers, a labour union said.

The Bangladesh accord runs to May 2018, but the government has agreed for it to continue beyond that date until a national regulatory body is ready to take over monitoring, a trade union said Tuesday.

Bangladesh handloom industry, a major source of earning for many rural people, is facing tough time. The handloom weavers are struggling for survival and are now forced to shift to other profession due to low wage coupled with lack of capital from the government.

According to the BHB (Bangladesh Handloom Board) data, about 0.129 million handlooms were closed down (made inactive) over the last three decades due to fund crisis, throwing over 0.10 million weavers out of employment.
