Foreign textile machines manufacturers eyeing Vietnam market

Vietnam, one of the biggest garment exporters in the world with $24 billion worth of exports in 2014 and to put out such big volume of goods the industry needs 6.5 billion meters of cloth more a year. In order to make out the volume of cloth, it will also need $6.5 billion worth of investment capital, 60 percent of which would be spent on machines, according Nguyen Van Tuan, deputy chair of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (Vinatas).

Vietnam International Fashion Fair (VIFF) 2015, jointly held by the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) and Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex), opened in Ho Chi Minh City on September 18.

The fair, is part of the activities in the national trade promotion programme and is held annually to introduce domestic and foreign customers production capacity and export of textile enterprises throughout the territory of Vietanem, reflecting the fashion industry’s latest achievements as well as brand new collections are being introduced at the fair.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement, of which Vietnam is a member, will come to a conclusion late this year has turned the Southeast Asian country into a so popular destination for investment for export. Many other countries outside of the TPP have already poured billions into the group to grasp the chances for exporting to the remaining eleven members, especially the U.S., which almost every country in the world wants to sell their goods to.

Vietnamese garment and textile has witnessed increase by 69.66 percent in the first five months this year in its export turnover to countries taking part in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations compared with the same period last year, according to the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association’s (Vitas) latest report.

Vitas forecast that the country's textile and garment export turnover could reach $27.5 to $28 billion this year.

Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the US and Vietnam are members of the TPP.

Vietnam’s textile exports has reached $12 million, growth of 9 percent compared to the same period last year, this is the lowest growth recorded for the last three years, well down on 19 percent recorded for the same period of last year, according to Vietnam Textile & Apparel Association (VITAS).

Textiles are a major export of Vietnam which is targeted at $27 million to $27.5 million for this year. In 2014 textile exports had reached $24 million.

The ASEAN - Korea Free Trade Agreement (AKFTA) led to a significant growth in Vietnam's textile and garment industry. According to its open-access commitment, Vietnamese textile and garment products that satisfy certificate of origin norms will enjoy zero tariffs once the agreement takes effect from January 1, 2016. Currently, Vietnamese firms pay a tax of 8 to 13 percent.

FDI pouring capital into Vietnamese textile-garment industry growing quickly

The number of foreign-invested enterprises (FDI) pouring capital into the textile industry is growing quickly. This year, in the past 10 months local governments have given approval for almost 20 new projects of FDI firms, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

However, the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas) has warned of the expanding gap between FDI and domestic firms in the textile-garment sector.
