Indian textile stocks fetched positive ROI despite lean phase

The stocks of textile companies have performed well in the last one year. Of the 52 textile stocks, 43 stocks have fetched positive ROIs despite Indian textiles going through a lean phase since the last few years and the government’s measures have done little to help the industry’s cause.

The list of woes is also a long one - falling exports of cotton yarn and apparel, growing competition from China, negative impact of global economic slowdown, mounting inventories, lack of capital infusion for technology upgradation and volatile stock markets among others.

Pakistan’s textile industry suffers due to high cost of business

High cost of doing business has started hitting textile industry of Pakistan severely as further closure of operations of the textile mills have been reported to the association, said Tariq Saud, Chairman of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA).

In November 2015, exports of cotton yarn and cotton fabric declined by 45% and 22%, respectively against the corresponding period in quantitative terms, which is an overall decline by 15% in value.

India's apparel exports supported by the expectations of increase in the global apparel trade and partly due to benefits of depreciated Indian rupee in 2015 are likely to increase to $18 billion and to $20 billion in 2016 as against $16.5 billion in 2014, according to a report from investment information and credit rating agency ICRA.

However depreciated rupee is unlikely to remain as a sustainable advantage in long-term as India's market share in world's trade has not significantly changed despite depreciation of Indian rupee during last three years, it said in a statement.

Currently in Pakistan there is a strong fibre base of 13 million bales of cotton which is almost stagnant for the past few years. To increase cotton based textile exports in the next five years, Pakistan textile industry has planned out a comprehensive strategy.

The proposed new measures include formulation of a new policy as well as restructuring of institutions dealing with cotton to promote availability of better cotton for the value-added sector in the textile value chain.

India, the largest producer of organic cotton (around 70 per cent of world production) and also the largest processing and export market of textiles using organic fibres with the most Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) certified facilities worldwide will stage the first ever international GOTS conference on 22 May.
