Pakistan sees surge in textile exports 7.17pc to $8.8bn

Pakistan exported textile and clothing products worth $8.8 billion during July-February period of the year 2017-18 as against $8.2 billion of the corresponding period of the previous year, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). Recording textile exports growth of 7.17 percent during eight months (July to February) of the ongoing financial year (2017-18).

The growth in textile and clothing products exports enhanced the country’s overall exports to $14.8 billion during July-February of 2017-18 as compared to $13.3 billion of the corresponding period of the last year.

The trading activity at cotton market remained lackluster on Wednesday as leading buyers kept to the sidelines amid uncertain outlook. Barring a few deals finalised by some small spinners. Slow demand for cotton yarn and grey cloth from the value-added textile sector discouraged spinners from further adding lint to their inventory.

There are strong indications that the current cotton season could be shorter than normal as very little phutti (seed cotton) has been left behind in the fields.

With buyers and sellers staying away from the proceedings kept cotton market conditions dull on Tuesday. The undertone was weak and outlook uncertain. However, low demand for cotton from the value-added textile sector is cited as another factor.

Moreover, slow demand for cotton yarn has forced many spinners to move cautiously and avoid building up their inventories.

The downward trend in world leading cotton markets has impacted the domestic market adversely.

The Pakistan Readymade Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) Chief Coordinator Ijaz Khokhar said that the country’s export of textile and clothing have been declining sharply during the last six months (July-Dec) of 2015 and the government needs to take preventive measures to enhance textile exports.

Pakistan’s export market has already shrunk due to high energy cost and discriminating import duties on the industry's raw material and a decline in cotton production, said Ijaz Khokhar.
