During trading week, fine grade demand combined with buyers’ eagerness for fine and second grade cotton for blending purposes kept physical prices on firm footings. During trading activities sellers demanded slightly higher prices for better grades under slower than expected influx of cottonseed in the ginneries during past week, traders said.

Slow trading was witnessed on Friday on cotton market as cotton prices continued to remain on the higher side with dwindling cotton stocks and spinners kept looking for quality lint which is running in short supply.

The Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) left its spot rates unchanged.

The textile industry, particularly the spinning sector expressed concern over the long delay in the arrival of next crop and falling cotton stock.

Cotton prices moving further higher to touch a new high level on Thursday due to fast dwindling cotton stocks in the Pakistan cotton market. Many needy spinners continued to look for quality lint, but mostly disappointed.

The textile industry is not only expressing concern over the rapidly falling cotton stocks but also for many export-oriented spinning units who have to meet their foreign commitments are unable to get quality lint.

The fear of long delay in the arrival of next crop, which will not reach ginneries before the end of July, is being feared by textile industry.

Strong demand from spinners provoked by dwindling stock with ginners for the current season crop are creating panic buying from needy spinners who are eager to replenish their stock due to which cotton prices has surged.

Floor brokers said that strong demand for quality lint pushed prices to new record high on ready counter with highest quoted prices going up to Rs5450 per maund.

However, the Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) spot rates remained unchanged at previous level.

Cotton prices were mostly stable in Pakistan local market

With cotton price maintaining stability, many medium-size textile mills continued to make need-based buying on day-to-day basis due to availability of limited working capital with them, a dealer said on Saturday.

In the local markets, trade turnover of cotton remained moderate at 5,900 bales (of 155 kilogram each).

Majority of the trade deals were made for a few hundred cotton bales across the country, said a broker at Karachi Cotton Exchange.

Increase in cotton prices was witnessed on Wednesday due to short supply and strong demand from spinners. According to market estimates, the current stocks of cotton in Pakistan are sufficient only to meet textile industry’s demand till end-April.

The delay in sowing of next cotton crop (2015-16) is also creating panic among spinners who will have to wait for another four to five months to get stocks from new crop.

The higher consumption of cotton this season by the textile industry has left reduced stocks of cotton with ginners which is also worrying spinners who have yet to see the season through.

On Tuesday at the cotton market, as quality lint remained in short supply against higher consumption, the cotton prices move upwards. But,the Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) kept its official rates fixed at Rs5,000 per maund.

The cotton analysts failed to understand as to why the KCA left its rates unchanged despite substantial increase in prices on ready deals.

They made deals for immediate use and fine grades sellers were in driving seat due to paucity of stuff while KCA remained busy taking steps to provide maximum benefit to the weak stakeholders to capitalize maximum on their stuff, floor brokers said on Thursday.

Spinners continued to build up stock despite rising cotton prices

Despite rising cotton prices on Tuesday, spinners continued to build up their stocks fearing delay in arrival of next crop. The next cotton crop is likely to be late by three to four days, as a result of the ongoing spell of rain in Punjab and cold weather in Sindh.

The higher consumption of cotton by the textile industry is also putting pressure on lint prices which have moved to a seasonal high of Rs5,250 per maund. However, shortage of quality lint is another major factor which has pushed prices up.

The Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) left its spot rates unchanged.

Pakistan cotton activity failed to pick up pace as cotton prices came under pressure on Thursday as ginners rushed to off-load their stocks in an attempt to ease their liquidity crunch and the falling trend in the world cotton markets including those of New York and India, is another factor affecting price in the domestic market.

Floor brokers said that from the outset there was selling pressure which pushed premium quality and lower grade cotton prices down between Rs50 and Rs100 per maund on ready deals. Phutti (seed cotton) prices also declined as a result.
