Weeklong handloom expo opens up in Vellore

The Handloom expo was inaugurated by the district collector R Nanthagopal on Monday which has handloom weavers attached to 57 cooperative weavers societies from across the district and some from other district who have set up around 12 stalls to market their products during this festive season.

According to K Selvarajan, assistant director handloom, the week-long expo is held to create public awareness about the handloom products besides helping the weavers to showcase their products and sell them directly to the consumers.

The Karnataka state government has steps to develop the textile sector is contemplating the launch of “Vastra bhagya” to hand out handloom sarees for women and dhotis for men belonging to BPL families on the occasion of two or three major festivals in the next fiscal, according to minister for textiles Babu Rao Chinchansur.

The minister said that there were 1.25 lakh working power looms, 75,000 working hand loom and around 10,000 manual looms at 1,000 co-operative societies. These units could produce sufficient quantity of hand loom sarees and dhotis for one crore plus BPL families.

The Tamil Nadu government has decided to continue with free saris and dhotis distribution scheme during the 2015 Pongal season. This scheme was started in 1982 by chief minister M G Ramachandran, after a failure of the north-east monsoon, to help the landless labourers. The scheme was upgraded in 2003 with the inclusion of polyster mix with cotton.
