ICAL stress need for certain sops to sustain cotton industry

Indian Cotton Association Limited (ICAL) an apex trade body has stressed on the need for certain sops to sustain the cotton industry as there is considerable drop in the area under cotton crop in Punjab this season which has impacted the traders, ginners and exporters.

The cotton traders calling the policies of the state government unsupportive have demanded scrapping of the minimum monthly electricity charges for ginning industry, rationalization of tax structure with the neighbouring states and supply of power to spinning industry at lower rates.

Three major trade bodies Indian Cotton Association Limited (ICAL), Northern India Textiles Mills Association (NITMA), and Mumbai-based Indian Society for Cotton Improvement (ISCI have decided to jointly organize a seminar 'Awareness of whitefly and best practices for growing cotton' at Abohar on March 21.

The seminar to be held to discussion and find way to avoid a repeat of the last year's pest attack on cotton crop in Punjab and Haryana. Cotton was sown over 4.5 lakh hectares in Punjab last year and two-third of it was damaged due to pest attack.

The cotton spinning industry welcomes reduction of VAT on cotton and other yarn from 6.05% to 3.63% in the state budget proposed on Tuesday.
The spinning industry was facing tough times in Punjab due to higher VAT, as spinners from neighbouring states used to sell it at 2% VAT, with this reduction in tax rates, the spinning industry will be able to compete, said Bathinda-based Indian Cotton Association Limited (ICAL) former president Rakesh Rathi.
